    1. Second time recently he’s fucked up an early challenge. It’s so fucking stupid.

I just don’t fucking get Boone’s obsession with this guy.

    1. Okay, I’ll give Sanchez this much. That wild pitch was all on Fried. Still, it was Sanchez who allowed the runner to get to third in the first place.

    1. Since his injury, he’s not been the same. That’s why you can never have enough pitching prospects.

  1. I’m watching it on my phone while having something else on my TV, and holy shit does the FoxSports app suck. Naturally, stats are always ahead of the broadcast (gambling sites get the info the fastest), but they SHOW THE STATS! Why are you showing me stats ahead of the count when YOU’RE the ones showing the game?!

  2. Sanchez challenged early on a CLOSE pitch when he DIDN’T on a more obvious strike in the first inning. Dollar to donuts someone gave him shit between innings. “CHALLENGE FUCKING STRIKES, ASSHOLE!”

  3. Whenever phenom has a little streak he always reverts to his mean. He’s now at 653 slithly below his career 661. Gotta love his foolish consistency.

    1. Agreed, but Cabby sucks, too. So I’m fine with him starting. I just don’t like BOTH of them being in the lineup. They need to add guys so that we never see them in the same lineup again.

    2. agreed, there is not point to having both. but cabby was hitting and playing defense when volpe came back – and they were winning. he’s also a better thief. I just don’t get why they rushed volpe back when he could use additional seasoning – or even just not to mess with what was working. I’ll die on that hill, and it makes sense that jose’s offense suffers because he has been asked to play so many more positions.

there is just no point in having both though. it is crazy and hopefully anthony is shipped to san diego ASAP.

    3. I don’t think that changing positions has made Cabby suddenly start swinging at everything. I don’t know what the heck is up with that shit.

    1. Max was seeing a decent amount of pitches but he can’t bat leadoff anymore since pitchers don’t have that much trouble simply challenging him and the at bats seem to be getting quicker.

    2. I actively LIKE Schuemann, but as a utility guy who won’t kill you if you play him at second or short (or coming in to pinch-run and then play the outfield or coming in to play the outfield after you pinch hit someone else).

Batting him leadoff and playing him in the outfield is just so embarrassing, and is likely something else we won’t see again after the trade deadline.

  4. The announcers are being stupid with Chivilli. “The Yankees are forced to use him more than they wanted to.” They are only using Chivilli because they WANT to use him. They have other dudes who could have been up here.

    1. Walks have always been the bane of Chivilli’s existence.

And that was AWFUL by Chivilli. WHY DID HE DO THAT?!

Clearly, they are all told to never challenge, and he did it anyways, and it was obviously a ball!

EDITED TO ADD: At least he came through in the end.

    1. And the walk comes around to score on some awful Dominguez defense in right. Ramirez is not a fast runner, but Dominguez bobbled the shit out of that.

    1. The offense sucks, to be sure, but Cruz and Headrick have both been great this season, and yet they combined to give up THREE RUNS in one inning. Can’t happen.

But yeah, it’s like Blackburn’s bad outing the other day. Your strategy can’t be “The relievers all have to be perfect” every game.

    1. Tuesday can’t come soon enough. No more Max Schuemann leadoff hitter, no more Volpe and Cabby in the same lineup, and no more Ali Sanchez period.

  5. OK I missed most of the game but why did our manager calla hit and run with Cabby up and Sanchez running? Isn’t Cabby more likely to strike out than hit into a double play?

Without Jones we’d get shut out every game.

Cruz has been good this year but the last 15 games he has a 4.5 era with 13 hits, 10 walks, in 14 innings. Over the last 7 games he has a 7.1 era with 14 baserunners in 6.1 innings. In other words he stinks now, We saw that with Holmes and Chapman.

    1. Cabby SHOULD be able to make contact. The pitcher just happened to throw a ball waaaaaaaaaaay out of the zone, and Cabby had no chance. He practically threw his bat at it to try to hit it.

    2. But you call hit and run to stay out of the double play and with Sanchez running there was no chance he’d steal successfully. I’d like to have at least some chance of stealing successfully.

  6. I don’t see how this team does better than a low wild card. This team stinks. The catchers stink. The middle infielders are mediocre. PGold is cooked. Grisham and Jason are fourth outfielders. Spence is TBD. Caballero, phenom, Rosario, and MacMahon all stink. Jazz stinks this year. Five runs in the last 3 games. You can’t expect Headrick, Blackburn, Cruz, Chivilli, Hill and Bednar all to pitch like Mo.

  7. PGold 189 last 15 games, 138 last 7, 380 OPS. Spencer Jones 785 OPS, now second highest OPS, 969 last 15 games. And if Cashman hod signed someone really bad like Slater, Jones would still be at Scranton.

  8. Boston has been a lock to pass the Yankees for like at least 10 days. Dodgers had 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 inning and only scored two.

What can the Yankees do by Monday except at the margins?

    1. What can the Yankees do by Monday except at the margins?

There is plenty they could do. A catcher and a good right-handed outfielder would significantly move the needle on this team.

If they add Arraez, as well, the whole complexion of the team changes.

There is also a ton of leeway between them and the bottom of the Wild Card race. You’d almost prefer to fall to the third Wild Card if you don’t win the division, face off against either the Rangers or the Central winner, then get the other team in the ALDS.

    1. Is this the best the Tigers could get? MLB’s dirty fingerprints are all over this, IMO.

    2. Unfortunately, that was always going to happen.

I don’t even mind them getting him, I mind them getting him for such a terrible return. River Ryan is fucking 28!!

    3. Detroit isn’t trying to win a championship, they’re just trying to spend as little money as possible while contending for the third wild card spot into September.

  9. In addition to what Brian said, one more thing the Yankees can do by Monday is addition by subtraction. They already offloaded Doval. Now they could consider the same for Volpe, Goldschmidt, Grisham, Schuemann, maybe even Chisholm, and two of the three catchers (maybe keep Wells to back up the offense-capable catcher they acquire).

  10. Dominguez has always had talent, but outside of the batter’s box he hasn’t shown much brains.
And as we all remember, even with a little brains and a little talent, Lola wasn’t able to save the Yankees’ pennant chances.

    1. He’s OPSing 656 that’s phenom territory.Thats piss poor even for an outfielder who can play defense.

  11. Detroit isn’t trying to win a championship, they’re just trying to spend as little money as possible while contending for the third wild card spot into September.

    Sort of like the Yankees.

  12. Back to how much the Yankees suck and how historic this year has been.

Katie S Yankees Last 4 games:
    ▪️2 runs allowed by SP
    ▪️1 team W

This is the first time in franchise history the Yankees had a 4-game span with 2 or fewer runs allowed by starting pitchers and 1 team win or fewer.

Sounds worse when she puts it like that.

  13. Still laughing. On the wikipedia page of Dick Stuart (the infamous Dr. Strangeglove), I found this:

“Other, less well known but equally unflattering nicknames included “Iron Glove” and, in a more literary vein, “The Ancient Mariner”, a reference to the first lines of the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: “It is an ancient Mariner, / And he stoppeth one of three”.”

  14. I suppose this is about the best they can do against a high 4 era RH pitcher,

    T Grisham (L) CF
    B Rice (L) 1B
    A Rosario (R) DH
    S Jones (L) LF
    J Domínguez (S) RF
    J Chisholm Jr. (L) 2B
    R McMahon (L) 3B
    J Caballero (R) SS
    A Wells (L) C

    1. instead of kc being a farm team for the yanks the dodgers get the rest of mlb and japan.

      unfair.

  15. Here’s my theory. There is something poisonous in the water in the Yankee home clubhouse that makes players ill. Not ill enough to go to the hospital but enough to weaken them, maybe affect their eyesight, or slow their reaction time. Judge drinks only bottled water so he’s unaffected. Everybody else gets it. It explains everything.

By the way BC, why are you so sure cashman is going to get anything if value before Tuesday?

  16. What does it take for someone to get fired? No one on this team except Rice and maybe Spence is any good but they shouldnt ALL BE THIS BAD.

  17. Are Rice’s lefty/righty splits that bad? If so, then fine, this should be a learning experience, maybe he can be significantly better. He can’t not be able to hit lefties and be a big-time player.

  18. Jasson 230 654 career 242 705 last year 257 719
    Jazz 220 693 career 244 759 last year 242 813

That’s a lot of under performing for two guys under 30

  19. My phonograph is on the fritz and i have the morbs. I’d best pick up some elixers and a copy of the Evening Standard to find out how the Highlanders finished today’s match.

    1. That’s not a bad thing, Don. If it were the other way around, you could see that as a red flag, too. I like it better this way.

  20. Washington will receive four players in return, with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale citing right-hander Yovanny Cruz as part of the trade package, and The Athletic’s Spencer Nusbaum reporting that right-handers Jack Cebert, Ben Grable, and Jake Bird as the other three players going to D.C.

    1. About the same haul as the Tigers got for Skubal. A couple of solid arms traded away. Does this mean Spencer Jones is being traded in another deal?

  21. I think Cash is just so used to having a team full of DHs that he’s uncomfortable when, due to all the injuries, he doesn’t have more of them than he can actually put at DH.
If you have a better explanation, I’m ready to hear it!

  22. The more I think about it, the only issue is the fit for the roster.
On a talent basis, they got what appears to be a really good offensive player for a bunch of people I couldn’t care less about.

    1. shame he can’t play 2b as jazz is useless.

but i guess you can have him, rice and goldy rotate through 1b and dh. maybe he can play left in spring training to see if it looks feasible and move belli to cf.

but another year of judge in rf and he’s getting a little old, could be a mistake.

  23. Cash supposedly pursuing the Cardinals’ Nootbaars, an outfielder who has hit progressively worse in each of the last 4 seasons. This season seems more like the last and poorest, with an OPS of about 690.
It’s not for his splits, he’s better against righties.
Please don’t trade anything of value for that.

  24. The Padres have rejected an offer that would have sent left-handed reliever Adrian Morejon to the Yankees in a deal for righty Will Warren, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. It is unclear if other players were involved in the proposal.

    Gausman to Cubs.

  25. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Yankees have had scouts watching Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos, who is also on the Phillies’ radar as per previous reports.

  26. Szymborski with a good analysis of Garcia and his impact on the lineup. Key paragraph:

Nobody will confuse García Jr. with a superstar, but he also might end up being the best offensive player moved at this trade deadline. In Washington, ZiPS believed García was due for some regression (as all of the projection systems did), expecting him to post a .273/.309/.467, 110 wRC+ line for the rest of the season. However, ZiPS sees García’s left-handed power bat as being particularly well-suited for Yankee Stadium, bumping that projection up to .270/.308/.487 (117 wRC+). ZiPS forecasts similar numbers from him in 2027.

Also some discussion of the pitching prospects dealt.

    1. So, not entirely redundant/useless in a universe where Rice returns to catcher and none of Judge, Stanton, nor Bellinger is available.

    1. It happens. I do sometimes think it helps righties. It’s fair. But at the same time, if you really believe that to be the norm, you’d have to specifically choose players badly suited to your ballpark.
One has to believe, I think, that, on average, players well suited to the park are not at a statistical disadvantage.

  27. Please tell me that a GM who set out to get a relief pitcher and a catcher, plus maybe an outfielder and/or a 2nd/SS/3B, is not going to get a first baseman and nothing else.

    1. Cashman just traded away FOUR relief pitchers, and cleared two 40-man spots in the process (Cruz, Bird, and Doval off, Garcia on). He obviously is not close to being done.
