  27. When I left lunch it was 6-3. Bednar is pretty good, just not that good. A championship team needs a better closer. Bednar is more an 8th inning guy. He had a 1.4 WHIP going into this game. This pen is borderline suck, probably not the worse but maybe the worst for a team over 500

    Even got lucky with Volpe today and still got wiped out.

    But Wells in particular – brutal. Send him to the minors where the coaching is good enough to have at least a hope of helping him. Can’t happen fast enough. They could have Bird catch, he couldn’t hit any worse.

  43. Wells is awful, but this game comes down to the simple fact that your closer can’t give up three-run home runs to Tyrone fucking Taylor. He shouldn’t be giving up three-run home runs PERIOD, but especially not to guys like Tyrone Taylor.

    1. The closer now has a WHIP of 1.55 and an era 4.95. You can’t keep putting men on base.

  46. With Wells, I really don’t think we can blame the Yankees for thinking that 2025 was Wells’ baseline. There really is no reason why it SHOULDN’T be his baseline. This dropoff this season is inexplicable.

    2. Agreed, but WHY? The dude is just coming off being the starting catcher for the fucking Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic! He was legitimately viewed as one of the best all-around catchers in the game (mediocre hitter and great defender = one of the better catchers out there).

      And then the season began, and he suddenly lost all ability to hit.

      It’s BAFFLING.

    3. Yea fine but there should be some major league ready depth at Scranton in case Wells got hurt or Escarra was a 170 hitter, l8ke a Marco Luciano, or Yanquiel Fernandez, or Tyler Hardman.

      Or they need a good reason not to use Rice.

      Rice catching may be worse than Rice at first, but Rice catching and Goldy hitting HAS to be better than Wells catching and Rice at first.

  49. This is only Bednar’s second blown save of the season, and only the second home run he has allowed as a Yankee. Boy, he sure loves to pick his spots to suck!

    Regarding the bullpen, I really think it is less that they suck, per se, but just two things are combining to really fuck them.

    The first is a standard problem that lots of teams have – their starters either throw too many pitches or grow ineffective quickly, forcing Boone to use relievers way too much. Their good relievers just pitch SO FUCKING MUCH. Jake Bird isn’t even that good, and yet he pitches ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

    The second is something that has mystified me all season long – YOU CAN’T CARRY TWO FUCKING LONG MEN. Why in the fucking WORLD do they have two fucking long men?! If they had a normal fucking bullpen, they would have had a good short man come in to relieve Elmer, instead of one of their long men.

    The whole point of long men is that they can give you bulk innings, and won’t kill you if they are needed for bulk and/or need to have a spot start. That’s Ryan Yarbrough to a tee. He’s a fine long man.

    THEN WHY DO THEY ALSO HAVE PAUL BLACKBURN?! They have an exhausted bullpen filled with guys who pitch ALL of the time, and yet they also have TWO LONG MEN?! It’s just MADNESS. Cashman has to end this terrible roster construction issue and just get rid of Blackburn or Yarbrough. Either or. It sucks for those guys, since neither of them are bad pitchers, but they don’t have a role on this team!

      I didn’t see Jazz being so terrible but have been punching the wall since they signed Grisham to the QO.

      And seriously, why didn’t Rice catch any innings in Spring? Makes no sense.

    2. Bednar 1.55 WHIP. That’s horrendous. People like to compare him to Wetteland whose Yankee WHIPs were 0.88 and 1.178. Bichette was hitting 130 over the last two weeks.
