From Andrew Simon:
Veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is returning to the Yankees on a one-year deal, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
The club has not confirmed the agreement.
I can just about 100% GUARANTEE you that the Yankeess had no intent on bringing Goldschmidt back, but his market just wasn’t there, and he’s too good to give up on.
Especially since, now that he’ll be the backup, he hopefully be rested and won’t die in the second half like he did last season.
I assume this means Rice remains the backup catcher, as Rice HAS been practicing his catching during the offseason.
Waldo and Rosario COULD be backup outfielders, but you probably want a righthanded outfielder who is a better hitter. Randall Grichuk would be perfect.
