From Bryan Hoch:
The Yankees walked off the field in the bottom of the first inning trailing by seven runs, knowing they’d need their greatest comeback of the year thus far to overcome Will Warren’s rough opening act.
Giancarlo Stanton helped close the gap with his first home run since returning from the injured list, capping a six-run fifth inning. Aaron Judge brought them all the way back in the eighth, launching a two-run shot into the second deck in left field — a no-doubter that drew salutes from his teammates on the top step of the dugout.
But Devin Williams — summoned to face the top of the Blue Jays’ order in the eighth inning — bounced a changeup for a wild pitch that allowed George Springer to trot home with the go-ahead run, handing the Yankees an 11-9 loss on Wednesday evening at Rogers Centre.
“Any loss is brutal, but for the offense to come back and battle back and tie it up like that, that’s all you can do there,” Judge said. “Just fight until the last out.”
I’m sorry, you know how disgusted I was at them for the first two losses in this series, but I can’t help it. I didn’t mind this one. Coming back from 8-0 to tie it at 9? That’s fucking awesome. And the game was blown by Devin Williams sucking for, like, the second time in two months. I can’t get mad about that. I just can’t.
I can be irked at Will Warren for being incredibly bad, but overall, I’m not angry at them. I’ve been knocking them for being pathetic losers, but they weren’t pathetic losers tonight. They came back from 8-0 down. That’s fucking nuts. Good for them.
Maybe they can salvage the final game of the series and leave Toronto still in first place. Maybe they can’t. Either way, I’m feeling a bit better about this bunch of losers than I was before they had a comeback from 8-0 down.
Trent Grisham is back, Jazz will almost assuredly finally get pushed off of third, Will Warren sucked, but he’s coming off a string of good starts, so whatever, sometimes dudes fucking suck, it happens. Even if they fall out of first place, it’s early July, they’re ten games over .500. They’re not a piece of shit team. I think Toronto and Tampa Bay are playing over their heads at the moment. I think the Yankees have a better roster than both of those teams, they just slumping at the moment. Hopefully that turns around. They were in second place heading into the All-Star break last year and easily won the division, and last year’s Orioles team is a lot better than either of these Toronto or Tampa Bay teams.
Featured image is Devin Williams giving the game away on a wild pitch (after the game, there was this whole thing about whether Rice should have corralled it. Dude, the ball bounced WAY away from Rice. He had not shot. What a weird thing for Rice to try to take the blame on).
Oh, as an aside, how in the FUCK do you walk George Springer with one out and Vladdy on deck? Williams really didn’t have his control at ALL, which was just unfortunate.
When one of your better players is quoted as saying that everyone knows the team is playing him out of position, it might mean the manager is losing the clubhouse. Which was pretty much Boone’s only redeeming feature. Cashman, it’s way past time to let him go.
Post game DeviW also seems to be out on Boone. “Wasn’t my decision” on the IBB to Vlad..,hmmmm…
The Williams pitch would have been tough to corral for any catcher because it looks like he missed his spot by about 4 feet. But I don’t understand the decision to pinch run Wells for Stanton in the 8th and then not put Wells in the catching position for the 9th – essentially wasting him. Couldn’t they have moved Rice to DH and Wells to C at the same time or would they have lost the DH? But if Wells can’t catch right now because of his hand, then it makes some sense … but also if he can’t catch or hit because of his hand, why is he not IL’d?
Cashman better have a 3B in his sights for the 2nd half – unfortunately there ain’t a lot out there other than Eugenio Suarez and I don’t know if this lineup can handle another free swinging K-machine. Maybe Cashman finally gets Moncada?
maybe they can give rojas some at bats to see if he’s figured something out, at least he’s a 3b.
i think either dj or stanton need to go, neither can play the field and you can’t carry both any more.
That’s why I can’t get on Cash too bad about not picking up a third baseman this offseason. Who was available that could fit into their budget (which was basically, like, $5 million) who was definitely going to be better than Waldo? Waldo is actually a GOOD defender at third base, and he was a mediocre hitter, so who on the market was clearly better than that? I don’t think such a player existed. It was just a really shitty market for third basemen, and it CONTINUES to be a shitty market for third basemen.
RHBs have 5 home runs and a 779 OPS vs Hill.
Warren does have an over 5 era. I know his FIP is much better. LHBs are hitting 832. Seems like some of his good games he’s escaped trouble because he was facing a weak team. Ten era last year, 5 this year, 6 in the minors last year. Time to show me.
The yanks released Arod one year removed from a 129+ OPS season. DJ hadn’t sniffed 100 in 3 years. Nice guy but seriously time to go!
Kirschner
1B: Paul Goldschmidt: -2 OAA
2B: DJ LeMahieu: -1 OAA
SS: Anthony Volpe: -2 OAA not phenom
3B: Jazz Chisholm Jr: -4 OAA not good
What was Jazz when he played 2b? This all comes down to entering the season without a 3b. Which we talked about before the season. This isn’t second guessing.
+3
Yankees taking their sweet time announcing a lineup. I suspect it’s because they’re unsure if Wells or Grisham can start.
Hopefully they finally move Jazz back to second tonight.
I’m betting against any Jazz move. Certainly not in Toronto and probably only then, maybe, if things get even worse.
Nope, Boone STILL won’t fucking do it. Jazz at third base, Oswald at second.
Just fucking insanity.
CF T. Grisham L
1B Ben Rice L
DH Aaron Judge R
RF C. Bellinger L
3B J. Chisholm L
LF J. Dominguez S
SS A. Volpe R
C Austin Wells L
2B O. Peraza R
Not even when DJ sits! Now that’s even more nuts.
Yeah, and Peraza is an actively GOOD defender at third, as well! It’s just major douchery.
They do it on purpose to prove that they are smarter than we are. They aren’t.
This Luis Ortiz situation is hilariously stupid. These gamblers really thought no one would notice that a massive influx of bets from just a few specific areas in the country all bet that Ortiz would throw a ball on the same pitch? Ray Charles would have seen how sketchy that shit looked.
Dodgers claim CJ Alexander who the Yankees released, Yankees claim Nicky Lopez who has a WRC+ of 46 in the PCL.
I suspect LeMahieu might be cut if they acquire a third baseman, and Lopez would just be back up in case of a Peraza injury.
