  1. Don’t worry. Boonie’s on top of it. From The Athletic:

The Yankees knew they had a hole in the infield last offseason. They could not count on LeMahieu to produce. He’s trended downward since 2020 and entered Tuesday’s game with an 82 wRC+. Defensively at second base, LeMahieu has minus-one outs above average. It is glaring how limited his range is in the middle infield. There are numerous balls that would likely be gobbled up by a more athletic player that end up in right field. Here’s a look at how the infield is performing against ground balls and bunts with Chisholm at second versus third base.

    Yankees’ batting average against

LeMahieu (2B), Volpe (SS), Chisholm (3B): .310 AVG
    Chisholm (2B), Volpe (SS), Peraza/Cabrera (3B): .191 AVG

It is mind-boggling that the Yankees continue to have Chisholm out of position at third base while LeMahieu is limited at second. One of the main areas the Yankees wanted to improve last offseason was team defense. With LeMahieu at second and Chisholm at third, the Yankees are willingly choosing to have two negatives on the field when a simple fix could be to move Chisholm back to his natural position, where he’s been a positive.

Boone did not rule out that possibility when asked after the game if it was a consideration.

“We’ll talk through that stuff,” Boone said.

The Yankees’ manager is quick to shoot down any impossibilities with his club, so the fact that he left it open means it could happen soon. He also would not say yes or no when asked if he thinks the current set-up is best for his team.

“Um, I think both guys are really talented defenders wherever they line up,” Boone said. “But, we’ll continue to look at things like that.”

The Yankees owe LeMahieu the rest of his $15 million salary this season and an additional $15 million next year. So far in 2025, he has been a below-average hitter, defender and baserunner. The Yankees should not be catering to what makes the 36-year-old most comfortable on the field. The Yankees’ lead in the division is shrinking by the day, and the club is continuing to start a player who’s been a negative in all facets of the game.

    The only question is why?

  2. I never wanted DJLM to come back at all. Didn’t want Stroman to come back.

But Rice’s 1st 1/3 of the season proving to be a fluke, Wells’ better-part-of-a-ROY season proving to be a fluke, Volpe not improving, and Jasson showing nothing special – if that’s all the case, then none of the rest of it matters.

    1. Savant’s numbers suggest Rice has been super unlucky. Yeah I was dead against bringing DJ back on those terms.

I don’t know if this is voodoo Sabremetrics or for real

      Batting
      xwOBA
      .413
      97
      xBA
      .295
      92
      xSLG
      .575
      97

    2. Rice is the second best hitter on team when it comes to quality contact.

The entire team sucked in June. Volpe better be hearing Lombard’s footsteps. I hope Anthony isn’t guaranteed a lifetime in pinstripes because he was a fan as a kid.

Almost $30 million for DJLM … oof.

Foolish Baseball had an interesting video on batters aging out of the game. It’s not good for hitters aged 36 or more. We may as well include Stanton in there too. He’s had one good season (2018) and one good enough (2021) as a Yankee. Since April of 2019: 517 games, .787 OPS, 124 HRs and 4.6 bWAR for $206m (plus they owe him another $34m after this season) while clogging up the DH spot.

    3. But Big Jamba aged so well. Maybe Hal can hook DJ and Stanton up with his people.

  3. Maybe these numbers were proprietary to The NY Times none of Boone, Cashman or the analytics were privy. As Sergeant Schultz said “how were we supposed to know.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. told me that “everyone knows I’m a second baseman.”

Jazz said he exclusively played at second this offseason and was told that was where he’d be.

What does it take to,get fired in this organization?

LeMahieu (2B), Volpe (SS), Chisholm (3B): .310 AVG
    Chisholm (2B), Volpe (SS), Peraza/Cabrera (3B): .191 AVG

  4. Someone in the front office needs to learn the meaning of the words “sunk
Cost”. In the dictionary of economics those words have a picture of DJLM next to it. Stanton too, though I’ll give it another month or two. DJ should have been let go two offseasons ago. What a poorly managed team on the field and upstairs.

    1. Yeah, next year is best case scenario. I wouldn’t call it struggling too much. He’s got a professional approach to the strike zone and that hasn’t changed in AA – which is also very much a pitchers’ league.

  5. I don’t like tonight’s matchup. Berrios is good and Warren is sometimes good for part of the game. Last night was kind of a must win game.

  6. Beeter up, Hartlieb down. Jazz still at 3rd, DJ at 2nd. Don’t mess with what’s not working and you gotta justify DJ’s contract. Rice catching.

Compromise when a ground ball pitcher is pitching play Jazz at 2B and Peraza at 3B.

    1. The Cashman-Boone way. If we make a change, then we admit we were wrong, and we’re never wrong, just mistaken.
