From Bryan Hoch:
In that long-gone era of sports history, when Aaron Judge had hit one fewer homer than his current Major League-leading total of 49, Giancarlo Stanton observed that his teammate was “playing a video game.” The stats are very much real life, but each night, the Yankees’ captain sure looks like he’s playing with the Konami code.
Judge homered for a fourth consecutive game on Friday night, partnering with a Stanton blast to power the Yankees past the Rockies, 3-0, at Yankee Stadium. Judge sits percentage points away from a pace that would match his own single-season American League home run record of 62, but his teammates believe that could just be an opening bid.
“He’s done it before. We can’t be surprised,” Stanton said. “And we’ve got plenty of time for him to do even more impressive things, to stay the course. We have time.”
Boy, Judge sure is good, huh?
This game, though, the Yankees really should have won this one going away, and it is disappointing how they continue to play down to their opponents’ level. Not cool.
Carlos Rodon pitched well, though, and he never seemed like the Rockies ever TRULY threatened against him, as the biggest hit they got came with two outs, and you had to feel pretty confident in him getting that third out. Rodon getting congratulations is the featured image. He seems to have slowly but surely how to pitch with his new mechanic issues. All of the great pitchers learn to deal with being a little older, a little out of their peak position, and Rodon is slowly looking like he is adjusting to the fact that his back is probably never going to be 100%. But his stuff is still so good, he SHOULD be able to still be a good pitcher.
Jake Cousins continues to make the case for being the Yankee closer. That dude is signed for, like, FOUR YEARS, through the 2028 season! Clay Holmes is a free agent at the end of the season. Cousins sure seems like he’s more likely to be the future than Holmes, no? Granted, Cousins is also already 30, so he’s probably not the future EITHER, just more so than Clay Holmes.
Will Warren on Saturday. This might not be pretty.
It’s going to be so frustrating when the Yankees re-sign Holmes for 3/54
Them needing all the moneys for Soto is going to be their saving grace.
stupid asshole astros can’t hold a lead
anyone notice rice steps into pitches, and, imo, makes it incredibly difficult to get around on inside pitches especially high and inside?
I DID notice that in one of his at-bats. I recall thinking, “Wait, huh? That doesn’t look good.”
yea, i think he’s fucked up now… Barring the instance that he turns extremely early I just don’t see how he can make quality contact on those pitches while keeping them fair
Might be tough to fix in season, but it SHOULD be fixable over the winter.
i’m trying to temper my excitement, but Effross appears to be pitching well. (I have no idea how his stuff looks or if he’s pumpkined into a AAAA player)
The Yankees have a nice stash of arms in AAA who have spent some time on the MLB roster this year and could really help down the stretch (and the postseason).
Also Schmidt.
Does 11/$500 get Soto re-signed?
boo, but hopefully
The bidding is going to be crazy. Ohtani made it pretty clear that he had strong preferences in his teams (and had/s some non-minor injury concerns). Soto hasn’t limited his options and is so young.
We’re not going to win a pure bidding WAR. Only Yankee history and the thought of playing with Judge can keep him here.
Grisham day,
Martian 105.3mph, 408’ Verdugo 80mph, 275’.
I miss the game also.

Yeah, it sucked from the minute some jerk in the Yankee FO thought of it.
[protesters chanting]
Hey, hey, Aaron J
How many bombs did you hit today
Damn this team has trouble scoring. Two on no out, just like yesterday, no runs. Big difference Will Warren and his 8.62 era, 6.11 in the minors, is pitching. This is our best AAA pitcher?
Are they not better off with a bullpen game?
Once in a while phenom looks like a major league hitter. Generally not.
Not sure if the walks indicate Verdugo is seeing the ball batter or doesn’t want to swing.
Anyone trying to use the mlb.com feed?
White Sox and Rockies and Halos and Tigers and Rexas are all severely underrated. Nobody ever wants to face them.
Will Warren is not a major league pitcher. So far 2ip, 5h, 3r,1bb era up to 9. Why isn’t Boone using a bullpen game.
Warren might be a cromulent pitcher someday. But he sucks a lot right now.
It takes a while for Boone to catch on to the painfully self-evident.
I mean how many chances does Warren get? He effing SUCKED in the minors. SUCKED! Three runs was already insurmountable against the 96 Braves staff.
I guess Cash and Boone don’t think a first round bye is important, they keep starting Warren and his 9.68 era. They’re going to need serious innings from the pen anyway. Brooks Kriske here he comes. They keep starting Verdugo while The Martian is raking.
Warren is a house money pitcher.
phenom still sucks, less than Verdugo, but sucks nevertheless.
Damn. How many more ABs is that?
Re: Soto. It will have to be done with some crazy trickery like Ohtani’s deal. But how much more do the Yankees want to pay Soto above what they are paying Judge?
If they want to do it, they’ll figure something out.
If they don’t, it doesn’t matter.
Honestly, the idea that Hal’s stinginess pushes us to invest ourselves in his finances is kind of awful. The numbers aren’t my worry. I’m going to feel good if they sign him and bad if they don’t.
I don’t like Verdugo stealing Judge’s homers
In fact I don’t like that guy at ALL
Would you trade 3 innings of pen use for a chance at a win? Boone says no. Couldve pulled him after 2.
Boone has zero “win today” in him. He’s all about “what can I possible sacrifice today to lose this game that might speculatively help in the long term.”
Rice might benefit from some more MiL coaching. Seriously.
Waiter! I’m sending back this Rice. It is offensively uninspiring, plain and simple. Needs seasoning.
Verdugo’s home run means The Martian might be a pinch runner.
Maybe Verdugo will have that one game, like DJLM’s one game, into which he put the entire year’s offense.
Or not.
Then they re-sign him and let Soto walk.
Meredith yesterday: Aaron what was Freeland and his 7 era doing to hold you hold the offense in check?
Today: What did the Rockies pitchers do today?
How many bad pitchers dominate this lineup? A couple of days ago Paul was remarking how some Detroit pitcher was pitching better than his era.
Playing down to their opponent, 15 innings, 5-runs. Of course, now that the game is out of hand, they can score a few more.
Tonkin is toast.
go astros
It’s shameful how they don’t get home runs for Judge
Judge HBP. BS.
Jake Cave has had a nice little career
weak, weak shit
watery diarrhea shit
It takes a special kind of team to lose 12-2 to the White Socks and 9-2 to the Rockies in the course of a few weeks.
It takes a special kind of team to be held to 5 runs in 2 games by the worst pitching staff in baseball.
They’re special.
So special.
Five runs in 18 innings against the Rockies.
Yankees are now 9-10 recently against Chicago, Texas, Detroit, Angels and Rockies.
So Special.
It’s right in front of us.
We Want Jasson! And We Want Him Now!
Boone on Warren we see all the flashes; he gets ahead and then lets him back in the count; he’ll get better (he can’t get worse). Will certainly a candidate to get he next start.
Blalock mixed pretty well. We had chances.
On Verdugo he’s been a little unlucky, gotta keep plugging away. A lot of good at bats.
Worst outcome a loss and Verdugo with a home run and a line drive out that he boo hooed his bad luck about.
Not a serious operation in the Bronx. Meanwhile, today’s Scrooge McDuck, aka Hal Steinbrenner, is counting his loot again.
O’s win.
No sense of urgency in the Bronx. The bye is meaningless. Might even let Warren get his next start.
Ian Hamilton strikes out the side at Somerset.
If they play 500 the rest of the way they’ll finish 92-70 and make the playoffs. And lose in round 1 to Boston?
Katie Sharp Yankees to allow 20+ Runs in their First 4 Career MLB Games:
Will Warren (2024)
Joe Lake (1908)
Walter Clarkson (1904)
106 years congratulations to Will Warren and Brian Cashman who thought you were ready and Arron Boone who gave you the late August start in the midst of a close AL East race.
Mercifully, Sunday is a 1:35 start, so they can get the loss out of the way early, and I can enjoy the rest of the day.
The great Austin Gomber a left handed pitcher with a league average era+ of 98 going tomorrow in an effort to totally humiliate The Yankees. A league average lefty against the Yankees is a problem.
I blame RLYW for Judge not hitting a homer – we kept this provocative thread and didn’t have a game thread.
_
Here’s hoping he makes us pay for that today!
Tonkin DFA, Bickford up.
Waiting their turn in Scranton yesterday;
Ron Marinaccio 1 IP, 0 R, 2 K (hold)
Scott Effross 1 IP, 1 R, 2 H (blown save)
Nick Burdi 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 K (win)
and Ian Hamilton 9 up 9 down at Somerset
6->9 today’s championship lineup
A Volpe (R) SS
J Trevino (R) C
A Verdugo (L) LF
D LeMahieu (R) 1B
LeMahieu in for defense, so good that you tolerate his absent offense.
Two plays in a row he didn’t make. The first one was hard… for Chisholm.
