What an absurd lineup.
Nice hustle by Gleyber to start the game. Thank goodness Verdugo isn’t leading off anymore.
I assume Mayza is here only because they don’t feel Effross is ready just yet (or they’re manipulating Effross’ service time).
The game tends to find Verdugo in moments he will suck.
God forbid they EVER give Verdugo a day off.
They aren’t a serious team. The guy has an OPS since May 1 ~285, and they keep running him out there. That isn’t serious stuff.
And Volpe, ugh.
Cabrera can play LF.
A nice piece of situational hitting? Come on, at least he got it in the air, but that was NOT a good at-bat.
What a fucking moronic opening to the at-bat by Volpe.
And then he follows that with a PATHETIC swing to make it quickly 0-2.
“When you’re struggling like Volpe is, you can’t find yourself in good counts.” Because he approaches the at-bats like a fucking moron!
FAKES A BUNT on the first pitch, takes a strike down the middle.
Meekly swings through while trying to check his swing at a pitch in the dirt.
Then swings through a pitch in with a terrible hack.
Even Verdugo would look at that at-bat and say, “What the fuck are you doing, dude?”
Volpe is so broken.
They allowed him to fester in 2023, he played almost every game while being bad offensively. He needed his ass kicked back to AAA in May 2023 (said so at the time), and unlike any [Yankees] team in recent memory, they just kept playing a rookie who sucked.
Is Boone barred from giving phenom a day or two off when he’s on a 1/32? Peraza and Cabrera can both play SS. I know phenom is right up there with Gunnar and Witt Jr, but a day off might help. He looks like a 1/32 hitter.
Is DJ really STILL a guy who makes contact?
Hey, he had a foul tip K. So he made contact.
Must _ Play_ LeMahieu.
Ben Rice 687
DJ 530 but he’s only had 197 PAs so he’s coming around nicely
That’s your run, Cole, so you’re going to have to be essentially perfect.
At least Trevino can also not throw anyone out.
Is this Gerrit Cole pitching tonight, or Luis Gil? Nibbling, nibbling, nibbling, and way too many pitches thrown.
In all seriousness, why can’t Austin Wells just play first base?
Trivia question is tricky!
If the White Sox 2B doesn’t drop that throw we might have been looking at scoring 7 runs in 3 games against Chicago. So of course Boone sits the 3rd and 4th best hitter while sticking with the 2 worst hitters on the team, in the league, in the MLB.
Three by my count, DJ, Verdugo, Volpe. I’m being kind to Gleyber.
One hit in four innings.
Gleyber 85 OPS+, Volpe 92 and falling, DJ 51, Verdugo 86-regulars all.
Has Boone hit for phenom all year? I need a smaller font to type phenom.
Great play by Gleyber.
I was NOT expecting that.
Why not just play Peraza at third and Waldo in left?
That’s fine but I want Waldo to play every day, for now, against RHPs. I also want phenom to get some days off. He started hitting after the ASB.
Wald! How about playing Wald at 3b against LHPs and see what he can do at SS and 2b against RHPs.
O’Neill always liked his swing and said he could be a 20 home run hitter.
Why not just play him at third PERIOD, and let Waldo play left?
IBB incoming. EDIT Nope, they pitch to Judge and he had a dreadful, Volpe-like, AB.
Hinch doesn’t seem like the kind of manager who would do that.
Why does Verdugo just NEVER SIT?!?
Or Volpe? Or recently DJ?
Recetnly? You mean since 2021, you sly fox.
Can’t be going 3-2 to every freakin’ guy, Cole!
Cole running out of gas. This is why you don’t waste pitches, dude!
That was basically a perfect pitch for the strikeout. Holy shit, Cole, that was amazing.
I’ll give Boone this much, Waldo IS a pretty shitty defensive left fielder.
Yankees hit sporadically in spots but they also have long stretches where they don’t hit at all.
I mean, they lead the AL in runs scored, right? And second in the Majors.
Here’s the thing – Trevino is a good enough hitter that he probably IS wasted at just being on the bench most of the time. So PLAY AUSTIN WELLS AT FIRST BASE!!
That would’ve been a good idea the last couple of years in the minors. Like when they brought up Waldo and put him in the outfield despite having not played the outfield at all in the minors.
Where has DJ’s batting eye gone!?
And yeah, the Verdugo question could EASILY be asked for LeMahieu, especially as he HAD been basically benched when Jazz got here…and he’s returned….to be the fucking FIRST BASEMAN?!!?
For a guy who makes contact,DJ sure swings and misses a lot.
He’s just lost at the plate right now, and Boone just keeps trotting him out there to play FIRST BASE. Against RIGHTIES.
It’s only 199 PAs, small sample, you can’t sit someone who led both leagues in hitting.
Weaver coming off a rough outing, and his infielders have all decided to fuck him.
What’s crazy about that play is that he CALLED OFF PERAZA to drop the fucking popup.
Is phenom a head case?
Rare terrible game for both Soto and Judge.
Okay, Judge was, like, “Yeah, nah, I got this. Fuck that ‘terrible game for both’ BS.”
That’s what I’m talking about.
I hope that Verdugo and Gleyber enjoy playing on Miami next year on make good contracts.
Interesting seeing Kahnle in the 8th.
All set up for Trey Sweeney to walk it off with a grand slam off of Holmes. After three errors to load the bases, of course.
At least LeMahieu did an actual swing on that one.
That’ll get him another 50 PAs.
Yeah I bet Boone will take that fly ball as something that DJ can build on. Verdugo, Volpe and DJ a combined 0/11throw in Stanton 0/3.
O’s lose.
Your first place New York Yankees. And with the Guardians’ loss, I believe the Yankees now have the best record in baseball, right?
Katie Sharp Yankees win 3-0 despite going 0-10 with RISP tonight.
This is the first time since June 17, 2012 vs Nationals that the Yankees won a game by 3+ runs while going 0-10 or worse with RISP.
What does Volpe have to do to get benched? Literally murder a relative of Cashman? He is beyond atrocious. He is appallingly, incomprehensibly, bad. He is not an MLB player right now.
I continue to be hopeful for Volpe long term, but the Yankees really seem to be dedicated to ruining any chance of him turning into anything beyond what he is now. An elite defensive SS with a streaky bat and pop is still really valuable, but it sure seems like the potential for so much more is there, even if it appears to be disappearing.
Here’s what I’d like to see for a while:
Torres 2B
Soto RF
Judge LF
Wells C
Stanton DH
Rice 1B
Cabrera 3B
Peraza SS
Grisham CF
Is it just me, or would they win much more often with that kind of lineup? I missed my calling: MLB manager!!
Looks good but Volpe and Vertigo have guarantees.
No DJ but fortunately Boone didn’t go too wacky-Verdugo and Volpe batting 6/7.in this afternoon’s game.
Tomorrows game is being played in Williamsport and it’s ESPN Sunday night.
