  1. Cashman is an unserious man. No serious man would [allow] Verdugo to hit leadoff with his trash OBP since May 1. Hal is the greater fool, though.

    1. He’s clearly got talent, he just doesn’t seem to know how to PITCH. He is just kind of throwing, but since he has good enough stuff, he can sort of get through shitty hitters.

  2. I hate Verdugo. Cashman signed him and helped Boston take his money off the books. In what world does he bat leadoff?

He should’ve been DFAed for this. Alex Verdugo said the bunt attempt he had was a decision he made on his own.

“I kind of didn’t really want to bunt but I was already kind of out there. I just got a little lazy with it and popped it up. That’s, like, the first bunt I’ve ever popped up. It happens.”

    1. I didn’t mind acquiring him (they gave up NOTHING for him), what I DO mind is that he’s treated like he’s a ten-time All-Star who can’t possibly be taken out of the lineup.

  3. Hey Ruocco maybe he looks impressive because 6/9 hitters in the lineup are replacement level or worse. Ruocco and Flash make Kay and anyone look good.

  4. I don’t mind letting Volpe play through it, but why would you not bat him 9th? Even with LeMahieu in the lineup, Volpe should be batting behind him until he shows SOMEthing. That was my concern when they moved him up in the lineup after he had some hits in the nine hole. Just keep him at #9.

    1. I don’t either only because there’s no other option. But he does effing suck. And what is with Boone and Rowson? Obviously Volpe is nowhere near this bad. I don’t know if it’s his mechanics or he’s a head case but this shouldn’t be. Volpe plus Verdugo and Gleyber having career worst seasons makes you wonder about Boone and Rowson.

  5. phenom at the plate reminds me of some of the short stops the Yankees played after Jeter got hurt one year. He’s 1/31. I’d actually rather see Verdugo or DJ hit.

  6. Again, if Tonkin is the last man in the bullpen, you have a pretty good bullpen. You still need a HIGH end guy at the top, of course, but still, it’s at least a pretty good bullpen if Tonkin is the last guy.

    1. that crop had many enemies – opposing players, time, injury, basic reading comprehension, walls

  8. 2016 Fangraphs eval I have gone back and forth on Judge the last few years, even going as far as to think he won’t hit for more than average power with his swing and inconsistency barreling up the ball. The most pertinent thing in opposition to my earlier projections is that Judge has simplified his swing, and as a result he doesn’t show as much of the choppy path that made me worry about him getting to his power. He used to have a bigger load, wrapping the bat around his head, which forced him to have to rush back to the ball and cut down on the lift in his swing.

    1. Chili Davis:Steve Kerr is most similar to –

      a) the new coaching hotness:eh
      b) Steve balboni: lose out on acquiring Pedro Martinez
      c) jim leyritz: playoff Mike napoli
      d) all of the above

      the correct answer is a

  9. you know, if the yankees instead sign Santander (and trade for Skenes, Witt, and Crotchet + sign Roki) thereby forgoing the burden of re-signing Soto, things might not be so bad next year.

  10. I think it’s getting pretty obvious that cashman is really not good at his job. The yanks will likely end up with 92-95 wins. And at the current pace will have TWO players with 10+ WAR! Meaning the rest if this team is really not good. Sure getting Soto was a great move but when you think about it, all his great moves are simply obvious – signing CC before 2009, signing Cole. Any non-obvious move is more likely to be bad than good. Why ownership allows this guy to blow hundreds of millions of their dollars without bringing them a championship is beyond me.

It looks like holding on to minor leaguers too long is another problem, Spencer Jones being the most recent. This was the year to go for it once he traded for Soto. Not getting Corbin burnes is quite possibly going to be as bad as the Verlander miss in 2017.

And why so many of the guys he gets are hurt so often is another puzzle. So he’s both bad and cursed.

    1. He refused to trade for Verlander because of the remains on the Verlander contract. That was it for me with him, the straw that broke the camel’s back moment (I had already been criticizing him before that).
