Here’s why I’m not too concerned about the Yankees being only two games over .500 through twelve games. Of the 29 other teams in the league, I think there are only eight teams who I am actively concerned about, in terms of their pitching. Those eight teams are…
Tigers
Mariners
Rangers
Phillies
Padres
Giants
Dodgers
Diamondbacks
The Yankees have faced two of those eight teams already in half of their first twelve games, and are facing a third now. Half of these teams, the Yankees only play once (so this will be it for the Giants after this series, and the Diamondbacks series was also the last of the Diamondbacks games for the Yankees this season).
So, in other words, the Yankees will be fine once they’re not playing teams with actively excellent starting pitching in the majority of their games played. But that means that this weekend might very well be brutal.
Not good. Rooting for rain all weekend.
4/11: RHP Marcus Stroman (0-0, 7.27) vs. LHP Robbie Ray (2-0, 3.18) +4.09
4/12: RHP Will Warren (0-0, 6.00) vs. RHP Jordan Hicks (1-0, 2.38) +3.62
4/13: LHP Carlos Rodón (1-2, 5.19) vs. RHP Logan Webb (1-0, 1.89) +3.30
What if baseball went to metal bats to increase offense?
How many pitchers, third baseman or third base coaches would Stanton kill yearly?
How could you take out a third-base coach from the DL?
Great start to the game for Stroman.
Adames swung at ball four.
;Just one of them.
I might prefer Cookie to Stroman at this point.
How can they keep running this guy out there each time through the rotation to give them no chance to win right out of the gate?
Rodon is more annoying than Stroman, but Stroman might just be a bad pitcher at this point.
Also, Stroman, if the umpire clearly isn’t giving you a pitch, how about you stop throwing it there?
“Maybe he’ll start calling it a strike the fifth time I throw it”
Good job, Stroman, he’ll definitely starting giving you that strike now with your sixth batter.
They’ve already lost this one, so might as well let Stroman soak up outs.
They have to at least CONSIDER starting Gomez for Stroman at this point. You can’t have a dude go out there giving you nothing every outing.
Plus, of course, if Stroman gets to 140 innings, you’re on the hook for him for next season. The guy is helping you out here! He’s giving you the perfect excuse to bench him.
Just switched on the game. This team is in big trouble. Terrible starters. So so offense.
With Warren going tomorrow, you can’t use Gomez tonight, can you?
I think you throw Yarbrough for 3 1/3, Hill for 1 2/3 innings, Cruz for a 1 1/3 innings, Hamilton for an inning, and then Leiter for an inning.
When’s the last time we started 3 pitchers in a series with ERAs 3/4 runs worse than the opposing pitchers?
What was the line on this game?
It’s like a bad joke.
This is just bad. A bad joke is them sticking with him for his next outing. Which you know they’ll do, even though they really, really shouldn’t.
Why is Bellinger, of all people, hitting behind Judge?
Who else would you put there?
Well, how many players batting after Bellinger have a higher OPS than Bellinger? (Hint: all of them.)
That’s the problem. Goldy, Rice and Judge are the only guys you feel good about. Against RHPs I’d probably use Wells and hope last summer was for real.
Belli had the second-best OPS last season of any current Yankee not named Judge. I don’t think you change plans based on, what, 9 games played so far?
Belli struck out on ball four.
Oh, the games on.
Oof.
Down 5, you can’t be walking dudes, Yarbrough.
Home runs gone to Jazz’s head. He shouldn’t be leading the league in Ks. Jazz hitting 176. Stroman 11.57 era.
I guess we know why Cashman couldn’t get any takers for Stroman
Jake Woodford, career era+85, is starting tonight at Scranton.
Ray vs. Jazz is hilarious, since Jazz will swing at anything, and Ray will throw pitches anywhere.
Psychologically, the constant 3-2 strikeouts really get to you.
Boy, imagine if this game wasn’t already over in the top of the first.
It’s a lot like Sevy a few year back. Just stop pitching the guys when they’re getting rocked in every outing!
Can’t believe that wasn’t a home run.
I’d hate to have bought tickets to this game.
That sure was a CT of an inning.
In term of problems, having a shitty starter is less of an issue than having shitty hitters because you can simply not pitch the starter, and even a mediocre starter will be an improvement. Gomez isn’t anything special, but he likely won’t just shit the bed every game out there, so just bench Stroman and use Gomez.
Fried
Schmidt
Rodon
Warren
Gomez
is a better rotation than what they have right now, and when Gil returns, it gets a lot better.
Stroman can’t even complain, as he’s been THAT bad.
I wouldn’t start Ryan Yarbrough over Stroman, but…well, at this point I would start Ryan Yarbrough over Marcus Stroman.
If you can bench a Hall of Famer like Mike Mussina, you can bench Marcus Stroman, who, as we all saw, was ALREADY BENCHED LAST YEAR.
I’ll give Stroman this much, I’d sooner start him than Cookie Carrasco, at least.
Brian, one feels that Stroman can always complain
Fair.
I really don’t even hate the Yankees’ hitters approaches tonight. They’ve been making Ray work. It’s all just on Stroman sucking.
Surprisingly not great play by Chapman. Wet ball maybe?
100% K at this point for Jazz.
Maybe 99.99% to be fair.
Wow, he made contact! 0 for his last 18. Insane.
Did they move the Yankees to the NL and not tell anyone?
It’s SO weird.
Wait it’s only FOURTH INNING???
I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Giants because of the history and the unis, even though they are the bitter rivals of my second team, the Dodgers
Cashman tried to trade Stroman, no one was that dumb.
Bad walks, Hamilton.
Et tu, Tim Hill?!
But seriously, who cares, this game was lost in the top of the first.
The best thing that could happen now would be an absolute downpour before the end of the 5th. The second best would be an absolute downpour after the end of the 5th so they don’t waste anymore bullpen innings.
Yeah, at this point, I’ll just take saving the bullpen.
They should just call this game.
Gomez is not the answer.
I don’t take too much out of a guy pitching in the pouring rain down 8-1. I’d still prefer to give him a shot than send Stroman out there again.
No velocity AND no movement? What even is there with this guy?!
Kay said 89mph fastball, 86 change.
“Kay said 89mph fastball, 86 change.”
With Rodon, he has awesome stuff and just a ten-cent head. Stroman appears to just simply be washed.
ChiSox beat Bosox.
That was very nice.
Hoch, “Marcus Stroman was sent for testing on his left knee, which Aaron Boone said was “bugging him.” X-rays were taken at Yankee Stadium.”
Come on, phantom IL stint!
lol, lmao
Boone on Stroman “We got to look at it and make some adjustments.”
Katie S Yankees starting pitcher ERA is now 5.46.
That’s the worst among all MLB teams.
Without Fried it would be 6.95.
We don’t need no stinkin’ starting pitching.
More Katie and extra credit for a Sidney Ponson mention
Yankees with at least 11.50 ERA thru 1st 3 starts of season in last 30 years:
Marcus Stroman (2025)
Phil Hughes (2011)
Chien-Ming Wang (2009)
Jeff Karstens (2007)
Sidney Ponson (2006)
