Povich is pretty terrible, so you KNOW they can’t win this one. But hey, at least they FINALLY led DJ off.
DJ handling the leadoff like it’s still 2019.
Oh good bases loaded. And Vertigo with the 11th worst BA in the MLB over the last 20 days up does the expected.
I was somehow still a bit surprised when Verdugo expanded the zone at a guy who had walked two of the last three batters to swing at ball three (that would have made the count 3-1). Why was I surprised that they were going to botch the bases loaded in the first AGAIN?
Now Cole has to give up three runs in the first to make it complete that we’re just reliving every single Yankee game of the last month.
So it begins…
I see we’re going to do the “Cole throws a lot of pitches, but the guy gets on base due to a fluke hit” routine again, like the Red Sox game.
While the Henderson single means automatic second base for him.
If everybody hits stupid maybe it’s not ONLY on the hitter.
Wasn’t the hit on DJ?
Yeah, it was on DJ. But it was fluky either way.
How is it that we’re just ten pitches into the bottom of the first, and this is already one of the most frustrating games ever?
EDITED TO ADD: Twelve pitches in, and it’s somehow even MORE frustrating. Cole, what the fuck are you DOING, dude?
Yesterday and today bases loaded 3 times with a total of 1 run scored. Can we talk about the hitting coach once again. Volpe and Vertigo horrible, Wells only now beginning to hit, DJ over the hill, Gleyber far and away the worst year of his career. On the flip side IKF and Rortvedt.
I mean it’s probably more Boone than Rowson.
Oh, come on.
Hey, a 1-pitch out.
Nice.
At first I thought line drive double play.
Are the O’s going to score fewer or more than 8 runs in the bottom of this inning?
Jesus, DJ!
As I said, much rather see Vivas leading off.
What the hell was Soto swinging at?
You might try to hide DJ in the lineup, but it’s virtually impossible. Got to try Vivas at 3rd and 2nd.
They still keep walking Soto, but at some point that’s going to stop. That looked awful.
Cole and his unlucky hits allowed. So annoying.
Well, starting things off with a hit. I totally didn’t see that coming.
Oh, come on, that can’t be an out.
And it wasn’t. Boone is a fucking idiot.
Boone threw away a challenge for that?
Goddammit. They can never have anything nice.
Also, wow, Soto sucks on defense.
But don’t worry, I’m sure Cole will strand the tying run at third against Gunner Henderson. Super sure.
Okay, that was a great fucking pitch to strike Henderson out.
Whoa! That’s a whole lotta pitches so far. Cole is really struggling. This won’t end well.
His strategy of waiting until he throws three balls before throwing a strike is likely not the smartest strategy.
Well, I totally didn’t see that coming.
How can you not have a SINGLE clean inning when they score some actual runs for you? HOW?!
They’ve long since blown past the “improbable to the point of practical impossibility” barrier.
By now Cole should be better. Another reason to worry.
I’m PISSED at his starts, but I think he looks fine. He’s just pitching like a moron. He did that a lot in 2022, as well.
The most important thing is that the pitches are all still really nice looking, velocity-wise.
Why is Nelson more worried about the momentum than the run?
Pitch one was bullshit, but Judge still made a very Stanton-like swing on the second pitch.
Okay, that third swing was also luckily Stantonian…the good kind. 😉
0-2 on Judge. Inspires confidence… well, how about that! I was wrong. Very nice.
Judge lives!
Verdugo is COMPLETELY guessing on each pitch. It’s pathetic.
Well, at least that wasn’t anywhere near close to a stolen base, just a lunkhead attempt. Consistency is what you want, right?
Verdugo looked pathetic, while Gleyber was busy with the worst jump I’ve seen since…Waldo against the Dodgers, I guess?
Gleyber is 70% stealing, 40% this season 5 attempts.
A lot of times, I’m pissed at the Yankee pitcher for not being able to put hitters away, but here, the Orioles hitters are fouling off some GOOD pitches.
And then that last foul was almost a home run!
Ooph, that was a tough call against Santander. Hyde might want to get thrown out tonight.
Volpe!!
Volpe….
What was the one with the exclamation point about, Brian?
Great catch.
Except for the score, it looks and feels like they’re convincingly losing.
What the fuck, Cole, two outs on three pitches? You’re doing this all wrong!
Not a great start to the DJ leadoff era!
DJ got an opportunity and he’s talking advantage.
Watching this, it’s hard to believe that Soto wouldn’t heal faster if he didn’t do that.
Yeah, it does seem SUPER violent.
Judge clearly down well over 300 points of OPS in a short time.
Hey, Gleyber, notice how much better it is when you don’t swing at the first pitch every fucking time?
Gleyber swings at 2 balls, takes strike 3
Cole loves to give up unlucky hits, doesn’t he?
The big difference between Cole and the other Yankee starters is that here, he is clearly the best chance at getting out of it. Not that he will, of course, but that he has the best chance.
Man, look at DJ after he made that catch! They must be all SOAKED with sweat.
A Yankee pitcher got thru 5.
Yankee hitters are not good.
Not good, DJ!!!

“The struggling Orioles bullpen”
I legit thought of you when they showed how bad the Orioles’ bullpen was this year, and I was, like, “Oh man, bebop is going to give them shit about how it WON’T be bad against the Yankees. The cure for all struggling bullpens.”
Holy shit, Jahmai Jones, how do you have THAT bad of an at-bat?!?
Couldn’t they have pinch-hit Grisham there?
Boone says, no.
HOLY SHIT, HOW LOST WAS DJ ON THAT FIRST PITCH SWING?!
What’s crazy is that DJ otherwise looks professional on his at-bats, but boy, the results have NOT been there tonight.
A pop up is encouraging. Maybe DJ can build on that.
Great AB, DJ. Tank pointing to ‘E’.
Wow, it’s funny how Soto is so unlike the other loser Yankee hitters.
Why didn’t Booner who loves to pinch run, run for Trevi. That could’ve been a disaster.
If pinch-running makes sense, you know Boone will never do it. If it doesn’t make sense, then he’ll do it. Boone’s Razor.
How bad could Rice POSSIBLY be on defense at fucking FIRST BASE? Boone is such a fucking moron.
Good job taking out Rice for defense, Boone! Galaxy brain thinking! We ALL know how important late inning first base defense is!
And now Trevy is hurt from running on the bases. Awesome. Just awesome thinking, Boone. Tremendous. Genius.
How is he starting with two balls?!!?
DIck call, Nelson. DJ obviously played that correctly. Just bad luck.
What the fuck, Holmes?!!?
You can’t let the ball get away from you there, Holmes. What the fuck?!
FFS, hit the batter?!?
How do you empty the benches for THAT?
O’s been stumbling, so I guess they … Yeah, why.
I don’t trust this to not make Holmes collapse.
Just two men to get on for Henderson to win the game.
COME ON, WALDO!
Yay, win.
Ph-fucking-ew, right?
Indeed. Hit batter, then falls behind Mullins 3-0 with 2 outs. Oh, I forgot to exhale. Ahhhhh!
Well, he did hit the guy in the head. I’m sure it was unintentional though, but still Holmes, c’mon. Hopefully the league office will issue an edict to these two teams and end it here.
Scary, but in a save situation in the rain and a struggling team, obviously a mistake. Hyde was a moron to make it a thing. MLB should absolutely be stepping in to prevent anything further.
