Again, one of the only good things about having so many terrible losses is that the Yankees have a lot of experience dealing with terrible losses, so they are better at shaking them off than other teams. Granted, that was against a much shittier Cleveland Guardians team, so who knows if that will work against a much better Dodgers team. PROBABLY not, but hey, we shall see!
Let’s go Yankees!!
Kirschner A day later, Aaron Boone said he felt going to Nestor Cortes was the right call. He did wrestle with leaving Luke Weaver in. He also said Gerrit Cole was done when he pulled him. Wouldn’t say why he was done but he’s healthy.
Never considered Hill .
Tried to tune in late enough to fade all the annoying fuckin replays.
Failed.
Sometimes sabbath observant really is awesome. I didn’t have to watch that debacle of a game that would have kept me up all night. Boone is an idiot – I think that’s the 100th time I’ve posted that this season. He Makes it impossible to
Win unless you dominate (or the other manager is a bigger idiot).
Pitch, defense, hit w/RISP. Or lose.
I don’t hate this, but baseball on time would be better.
Ice Cube sucks
This stupid DVR, I watched 5 minutes of the pregame on Fox, just turned on the game and it took me back to half hour before game.
Jesus H could we play some fuckin baseball already? Save this shit for the NFL.
Yankees absolutely need to get to Yamamoto early.
Probably not strikes, but I’d like for Rodon to get that call, so I think I wanted those to be strikes.
Nice ab
The psychological aspect of yesterday is so overhyped. Grand Slam HR? Two run HR? What’s the diff?
100% agreed. A basehit to the outfield of ANY kind wins that game, so it being a grand slam was pretty much meaningless. The Gibson homer mattered because the ONLY way they win there was with a home run.
If the Yankees were up 2 runs or 3, then it would be one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. But they weren’t, so it wasn’t.
They should start weekend games at 7:30 Eastern
More Ks today Judge or Wells?
Judge takes the early lead.
Judge gets more ABs so I’ll go with Judge.
So many of his swings have been so embarrassing.
Judge just isn’t seeing breaking balls at all right now.
Just so, so embarrassing.
Well. 20 pitches is good at least.
More than 21 woulda been gooder.
RISP Fail early (and often, no doubt). Just a shitshow as usual.
Sure would have been nice to make him throw more than 21 pitches when he was at 20 pitches through three batters.
Fuck. Stanton you needed to make him throw pitches
👍🏻
I don’t think Yamamoto looked particularly good. I think the Yankees get to him.
Judge morphs into late-season Wells. Who had that on their dance card?
Judge post season 24 47 PAs 37 ABs 17 Ks
Career post season OSP. 753 before tonight’s game.
Tough play, but come on, dudes!
Yankees hitting 171 for the playoffs.
What the fuck Soto
Juan Soto Field Like a Normal Major Leaguer Challenge.
(Impossible)
Yankees just so fundamentally unsound.
Shows how very weak the AL was in 2024, that this is the best they’ve got.
As was warned of with Soto’s defense. So far, he’s putting quite a WS display in RF.
How more post seasons games of sucktitude before we say judge is a choker? Sure he runs into one every now and then but just wow. Nick swisher like.
He wasn’t good this year, but this is a whole different level.
“So much history between these two teams” and then they show four pictures of players from 77. 78 and 81.
Imagine, history starting before 1968.
Advertisers don’t like black and white. I read a book The Era about NY Baseball 40s and 50s.
He’s got away to go, Cano set a postseason record with 29 straight hitless at-bats on his way to a 3-for-40 (.075) showing in the Yankees’ nine postseason games in 2012.
At least Rizzo noticed Yamamoto is nibbling
That 1-0 curve to volpe was filthy
Shit, that seemed like good wood.
Shouldn’t Boone be telling the black holes at the bottom of this lineup to get up there and take like motherfuckers just to get the pitch count up? No swings til 2 strikes. This doesn’t seem complicated.
Volpe hits some good but they just kind of hang up and not quite enough exit velo.
The Dodgers had a 27% win probability with Freeman up last night! That’s not even that low!
That IS the problem with Rodon.
Edman has had quite the postseason.
I’m certainly not saying that Edman wouldn’t have hit that same home run if it was a 0-2 count, but boy, it sure would have been nicer had Rodon not thrown such stupid pitches for the first two pitches of that at-bat.
Rodon is doing that Gil thing where they nibble way out of the zone. He then came back to get Muncy, but after completely WASTING two pitches. You don’t get paid extra for extra pitches, Rodon! Throw pitches where they might actually swing at them!
And on cue, he throws a high fastball that was never ever going to be offered at.
And then ANOTHER one, making it a 2-2 count.
Then at least he followed with two good pitches that Smith just fouled off.
What a play by Wells!
John Smoltz almost has me rooting for a sweep.
I’m just listening to music with the sound off. Letting my wife pick what we listen to, so she’s engaged, at least. 🙂
The announcing is both bad and nonstop
Dodgers Edman 294/101, Muncy 232/141, Smith 241/116, Rojas 283/113, Yankees only Jazz and Wells over 100 OPS+ and Wells is in a coma. Cashman’s depth.
By the way, Tim Hill could have EASILY blown the game last night, too, so it wasn’t like the Nestor move took them from a sure win to a loss. Jake Cousins sucking was the biggest problem, really.
Walking Lux, ugh.
Yeah, that was just MADNESS with Ohtani looming.
Pulling Cole meant we would see Cousins or Hill or Nestor and maybe Leiter.
Hey, not a ground ball by Verdugo. But still, a 3-pitch out.
Mr. Soto!
He is going to make so much fucking money.
Hopefully so much of Hal’s money.
Soto!
Doesn’t fix last night, but it’s a start
That’ll play.
Soto and Gianni have been GREAT. Gleyber very good. Everyone else awful.
Judge needs to have his hitting coach waiting for him at the airport.
They keep playing Eminence Front as bumper music. I feel like that should summon Paul O’Neill into the dugout. Maybe smash a cooler or two to keep these clowns honest.
Two outs and then, Boom! Rodon, dummy.
Well, if they take this series to six, I will so be looking forward to this fucking guy going.
there’s Carlos.
Dodgers have a lot of good players. The Yankees a few. They are a clearly better team. The only advantage the Yankees have had is Cole and the D plus Boone plus Nestor blew that edge. Yesterday was must win.
Task: shut them out the rest of the way and score at least 4 to win. Task completion: highly improbable.
Here’s the thing, though, Freeman is obviously healthy now. He’s a very good hitter. I don’t get the “gimpy” stuff when the guy was clearly healed last night!
Just don’t get swept.Jesus.
At least they’re not getting embarrassed by the Mets.
All I got.
Ah, meltdown Rodon. Game done. Series not returning to LA. This Yankees team have that awe of the Dodgers, so there’s that.
Did any 1950’s Dodgers player leading into a WS tell the media that Mickey Mantle was the best player in the game? Unheard of, unhinged crap from a Captain.
This game is still in reach, but Rodon needed to not suck
This ain’t 96. The 96 Yanks were tons better than the 2024 Yanks. This ain’t 2009 where CC lost game 1, the 2009 Yanks were tons better than the 2024 Yanks and the 2024 Dodgers are better than the 2009 Phils. I’m surprised the betting line was so close.
it wasn’t tonight. Dodgers went off like -135
They had actual leaders in the clubhouse on those teams, like the 1976-1978 teams also had. This team has no such types. See the dumb remark by Rizzo after the first game, and that was what they were talking about in the clubhouse post game?
That’s why yesterday was must win.
Awestruck Bronx Bumpkins vs. LA Dodgers.
The Dodgers are dangerous throughout the lineup. After Stanton the Yankees are AL Central level. Donaldson, DJ and Verdugo were all wasted opportunities. How could the Dodgers get players like Teoscar and Erdmanwhile also paying Ohtani, Betts and Freeman?
Ah, start off with a 3-pich out. Get the loss over quickly. Then Jazz does the same. Then Rizzo takes it to 4-pitches for the out. Get the plane ready.
They even caught up on pitch count.
In 2009 they lost game 1 and then AJ Burnett pitched great in game 2. This time? Rodon Not so great.
https://x.com/mryclept/status/1850197927483900357
I don’t think what Rizzo or Judge said means shit. Past the first four hitters the Yankees are AL Central. Jazz an OK 7/8 hitter. Rizzo cooked. phenom overrated. Verdugo sucks. Judge I just don’t understand why he’s been so bad.
We could easily have lost to KC or Cleveland. At no time did the Yankees look like a clearly superior team to either KC or Cleveland.
Shows a defeatist mindset by the players.
They’re just not good, and we both know that. As the quote goes this team is a mile wide and an inch deep.
Pulling Rodon here is certainly a decision.
Boone said “I feel like we’ve taken some tough ABs on him.” Besides Gleyber and Soto, who? Boone always says that shit.
Fuck Boone
And Judge is Boone’s biggest defender.
Rout, incoming.
Is this just to build up Cousins’ confidence? I don’t get Boone’s approach here.
It seriously almost happened AGAIN on the throw-in.
Good centerfielder gets that.
Idk, that’s a tough play for anyone
Why is Stroman here if not for this?
I thiiiiiiiiiiink that Boone believes the game is still winnable, while Stroman would be the white flag.
He’s wrong, and Stroman should have started next inning if not this one.
Yankee FO is satisfied with the team being above average, they have no interest in greatness.
Next year Gleyber or Soto will be gone and Gleyber’s replacement will be another 85 OPS+ hitter that Cash finds dirt cheap.
Volpe sees the filthiest pitches
Well, THAT was a nicely pathetic inning.
I guess you give them the sixth to see if they can get some guys on for Stanton, but otherwise, this game is O-V-E-R.
Volpe in September 177/432. Since a really good start to the season phenom has perhaps been the biggest failure/ disappointment I can remember. Sure Bird, but he was hurt. Spencer and Maas one good month each. phenom is a defense first SS which would be OK if we had a 1B and a LF or a 3B who could hit.
I 100% believe volpe will hit when he leaves the Yankees
He’s here until his FA year or the super unlikely possibility that the Yankees develop someone..
Another Verdugo play any kind of half decent LF would’ve made without spazzing all over the field.
A day late indeed. Did Cash or Hal watch. A 1.59 era postseason. When the Fox broadcasters and the Yankee postgame crew all criticize Boone, you know it was bad blunder.
Sure glad that that dude didn’t get to pitch last night. Thanks, Boone, you fucking dummy!
FUCK YOU AARON BOONE for last night. Ad bad as when Boone used Mike Ford batting 150 to pinch hit instead of Clint Frazier who was OPSing 900.
Boone is the stupidest baseball manager I’ve ever seen.
I can’t believe Judge took that 2-0 fastball.
He took that, and then swung through two garbage pitches. What is with that dude’s head this postseason?!
Yankees needed to get to flaherty or Yamamoto and really didn’t. They will not win this series.
Yankees batters mowing themselves down.
In 2000 Yankees only won 87 games. Their lineup in game 1 had Knoblauch, Jeter, Judge, Bernie,Tino, Jorge and Paulie. The relievers were Nelson, Mo and Stanton. Sure they had Sojo. This team has 5 Sojos.
Man, this just gave me flashbacks to Kay self-satisfyingly invoking “QuanGorMo” every fucking chance he got.
Jesus wept announcers are terrible at their jobs.
FUCK YOU AARON BOONE. Joe Torre fired. Girardi fired. Boone is here and probably will for another 5. And Cashman will b where forever.
How could he have known that Hill would pitch well, though? Besides every other game of the postseason, of course.
Why is Stroman on the roster if he’s not going to get into the games your starter doesn’t go four innings? Is he here as a mascot or something?
I sort of get it. So long as it’s only a three run game, they’re still THEORETICALLY in it, so he wants to keep it at four runs, which Stroman wouldn’t do. Once one of the relievers gives up a run, though, he’ll give up and use Stroman.
These Tom Brady commercials are stupid.
Where is it written that the Yankees can’t roll a yahtzee in the 9th ?
What a coincidence that Yamamoto’s best two performances came agains the Yankees.
Sure seems like since Boone got here the Yankees have struggled offensively in the playoffs.
Yankee 5-9 is like having 5 Luis Sojos and Miguel Cairos. Two out rally? These guys, I don’t thinks so.
I think there’s actually a better than even chance that they bring Rizzo back at this point on a very reduced salary. They owe him a $6 million buyout, so throw $4 million on top of that and he’d take home $10 million next year. I think he’d take that, and it would give them time to develop a first baseman other than Ben Rice.
No thanks.
Are you cool with Ben Rice playing everyday?
You can’t. His power is gone and that was his biggest asset.
Please no.
Rizzo is cooked.
Boone fucks up every post season and it seems like he’ll be here for life. I wish we never made the playoffs in 2022.
I know the game is lost already, but imagine going to 3-2 on the #9 hitter to lead off the inning, IMAGINE that.
LOOOOOOOOOLOHTANI
Oof, hope he’s okay.
Fuck ‘im.
Broken arm
Yankees are playing without Judge, Dodgers should play without Ohtani. I hope he’s OK but if he had hurt himself because of a pothole at Yankee stadium that would’ve been Karma.
Maybe Judge snuck some dirt from the banks of the Harlem onto the Dodger infield.
Nice throw by Wells. If only he could remember how to hit before 2025
Austin phenom #2 another failure of Yankee devlopment.
Verdugo has outdone himself at sucking in this World Series. Has he even hit one ball hard. And Wells 4/41, 8/9 are a disaster to behold.
Must play Verdugo, he’s the future. An unserious organization, which also has Trevino on the post season roster.
I don’t think Trevino is the problem.
But they need to PH for Wells and that means Trevino and that means stolen bases.
Jazz 167/484 hitting 5th!, Wells 098/330, Verdugo 184/499.
Smoltz is the best announcer in the universe
Is he the one who realized there’s no special moments unless you win? That was pretty impressive for a tv voice.
Amazing watching the Yankees batters mowing themselves down. Koufax and Drysdale, as advertised.
Yeah I was thinking about Koufax and Drysdale, Flaherty and Yamamoto not quite.
Please no CT, a one hit loss is fitting.
Judge getting another chance at another K.
And there it is.
Ooph, it’s so rough to watch.
Nineteen and counting this post season.
Nice, Stanton! Come on, Jazz!
Judge’s career post season BA may have dipped under the Mendoza line.
Jazz great #5 hitter or greatest.
Seriously?
If Rizzo has a HR left in him, now would be the time for it.
Rizzo with a Bobby Thompson moment?
When is the last time Volpe hit a HR?
I’ll take it.
phenom with a Bobby Thompson moment?
Roberts’ devotion to Treinen is weird.
Why pinch run for Rizzo?
Ball up the alley, or down the line. As if.
Phenom phail.
What an awful, awful swing. Ugh.
Bobby Thompson didn’t do that.
Come on, multiple wild pitches and passed balls!
That was a deeply terrible ab from volpe
SO bad. It’s like the days off made him forget everything he was doing correctly in the ALCS.
Leave Wells in. Get that first pitch pop up to really seal the CT.
Wells, Trevino. Eveyrone on this roster is capable.
Interesting to hear Smoltz analyze phenoms mechanics and swing. Why were Boone and Rowson so incapable of fixing phenom.
This is hilarious
Trevino, LOL. Boonerisms all around.
Why in the WORLD wouldn’t you use Dominguez there?!
They don’t like him, that is obvious. I’m serious. Because who would PH Trevino unless there was no one else.
Well that sucked
Helluva job Brian Cashman making Trevino the best Right Handed batter coming off the bench in the World Series.
phenom really stinks
As I said a while ago, this is easily the worst post season roster the Yankees have ever had.
I agree.
For the season phenom hit 243 but 214 with RISP. Did Boone and Rowson ruin phenoms 1 and 2?
What did Judge’s hitting coach say? He was correct. And I’d rather have Wells hit than the joke of PH Trevino.
I don’t agree but it’s like a migraine or diarrhea. There were no good options.
On the bench Trent LHB, Martian not good hitting right handed and Trevino. This is the depth that Cashman built.
That phenom’s mechanics are so fucking bad is an indictment of Boone and Rowson. I can’t blame them for Judge, that’s on Judge.
The next Jeter with OPS+ of 81 and 86 in his career isn’t even the next IKF.
“I loved our compete to the very end was really good. I loved the at bats till the very end.” Even Judge and phenom?
Did he love the Trevino AB?
Trevi at least made contact, Judge and phenom looked totally overmatched. That Trevi got that AB is totally on boy genius Cashman. That Nestor came in yesterday is totally on our dumb as rocks manager.
WS RISP 2/14, 17 LOB. A continuation of the ALDS and ALCS.
This will be the closest WS sweep ever.
Yankees were actually better in the 17 and 19 ALCS.
A couple of these guys need to look themselves in a mirror.
Why are the reporters asking Judge about Ohtani’s injury?
You know why.
Ohtani suffered a shoulder subluxation, a partial dislocation of the shoulder, not nearly as serious as a full dislocation. I believe his post season is done.
I wouldn’t have minded him stepping in a drainage ditch at Yankee Stadium to compensate for Judge last year. Hammurabi’s code addressed this situation.
RAB “ The good news is the sooner this series ends, the sooner we no longer have to watch Alex Verdugo play baseball. What an awful player.”
Cashman sure can pickem. Gallo, Donaldson and Vertigo.
This, uh. this is all pretty depressing.
Today’s Boone fail: using the backup catcher to pinch hit when your CF of the future is on the bench. Saying he can’t hit right-handed is ridiculous given the small sample size in MLB and MIL so far.
I was listening to the ESPN radio call and even earlier in the game they were talking about the possibility of hitting Dominguez for Wells against a lefty. I chuckled to myself, knowing Boone would never obviously upgrade when pinch-hitting. And then in the 9th they were discussing Dominguez as likely getting a shot and then sounded genuinely surprised when Trevino came up. I was not. Boone is literally the worst tactical manager ever.
We’ll never know if the more optimal moves would have worked out, but it’s so easy to first-guess objectively terrible moves as they happen.
