From Brent Maguire:
Aaron Boone will return as Yankees manager in 2027, a source told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. The team has not commented on the news.
Boone is entering the final year of his contract with the Yankees in ‘27, which will mark his 10th season at the helm for New York. In 2026, the Yankees finished with 93 wins and secured the top Wild Card spot. They swept the Red Sox in two games in the Wild Card Series before they were swept in the ALDS by the Rays.
In nine seasons with the Yankees, Boone’s clubs have won three AL East division titles and made it to the playoffs eight times, only missing out during the 2023 season. The Yankees have advanced to the ALCS three times during that span, including a World Series appearance in 2024 in a loss to the Dodgers.
We all knew this was going to happen, since Boone is under contract for next season already, they were obviously going to give him one more year. The only solace we have is that it is very likely that they will part ways with Boone if they don’t win the American League pennant next season (I know people would like to say he needs to win the World Series, but come on, that’s obviously not going to be their limit for bringing Boone back. A pennant would do).
And since it was SO obviously going to happen, I don’t even have much of a reaction to the news, since it was a fait accompli. Let’s hope Cashman picks up Sato for next season (and that we HAVE a next season).
In 9 seasons with the Yankees the team is 27-30 in playoff games and in 24/25/26 the team went out with barely a whimper.
I guess Hal wasn’t too upset.
Odd that it doesn’t at least bother Hal that he has to spend so much more than all the other teams in his division to achieve that same level of mediocrity half the other teams can boast of.
Brian Cashman Says He’s Finalizing Yankees Contract Extension, ‘We’re Locked and Loaded’
And in related news the CEO of Pets.com has agreed to stay on with a 20% pay hike.
The Yankees FO is locked, loaded, and aimed at their own foot, point blank.
Don’t let anyone say they’re not flexible.
” The only solace we have is that it is very likely that they will part ways with Boone if they don’t win the American League pennant next season (I know people would like to say he needs to win the World Series, but come on, that’s obviously not going to be their limit for bringing Boone back. I see zero basis for this statement. Is there something I’m missing? I firmly believe that if they miss the playoffs entirely next season, that’ll be no threat to Boone’s next contract. They love their status quo, they feel no reason to limit the virtue of loyalty by connecting it to something as transient as performance. Maybe if they won only 37 games next year they’d finally start to reconsider. Even then, you couldn’t be certain.
It’ll be a shortened season, probably won’t even start till June or July, so 37 games would be acceptable.
In good news, there is a delicious smell of roasting beef from the taco joint around the corner wafting through my window
That IS good news. What are we talking here? Asada? Barbacoa?
asada I believe
Honestly not pre-emptively renewing him is surprising
Aaron Boone: “I think I’m good at my job. I think we have a lot of the right people in the building, but at the end of the day, a championship with me at the helm, ultimately that’s what has to happen … like, that’s why I’m doing this.”
Listen to how he says that.
Nobody tell him that there are managers who win MULTIPLE championships.
In a row, even.
But even he isn’t delusional enough to see that happening with him. Doesn’t even OCCUR to him.
“Cash is great every season,” Steinbrenner said via video call from George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. “I mean, I think the roster he put together, the team that we rolled out of spring training with, was as good as any in baseball, in my opinion.
“We had a lot of bumps and bruises along the way, but the team was fantastic. And I thought it was a world championship team.
“Talking about this season, I thought Boone managed a good season, especially with the pitching staff. We had a lot of additions and subtractions in the rotation throughout the course of the season. Our bullpen was absolutely exhausted by the end of the season. He got through all that and he got us to the playoffs.”
Steinbrenner then laid the blame on his players.

Yankees were very unlucky in the way random players like MacMahon and Grisham got assigned to the team by Manfred.
Unbelievable.
“Seated behind a table and a microphone a thousand miles away from the Bronx [AND REALITY AS WE KNOW IT], New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner…”
They made the WS in 2024.
And then they lost in 5, thoroughly outplayed.
They gave away several games. It wasn’t a whimper season, though.
It wasn’t a whimper season.
But what it surely was – is exactly what the Dodgers said. It was a team that didn’t realize the potential of the players’ talent because they were woefully, painfully, obviously unprepared to play professional baseball. The sheer talent almost overcame that.
To slightly change what Hal said, it is squarely on the shoulders of Boone that the fault lies.
I don’t think you can complain too much about shitting it up in the World Series, as it means you made the World Series. 2024 is definitely a highlight season overall. They just need to actually WIN another one.
“I don’t think you can complain too much about shitting it up in the World Series.”
Brian, it’s like you don’t even KNOW this place!
But – whatever your ultimate assessment of 2024, which doesn’t matter so much – I stand by the idea.
On the whole, they have a ton of talent.
On the whole, they are shockingly unprepared to play professional baseball.
If they HAD been prepared, they’d have won a WS. And very likely more than one.
Either Hal is a rube or thinks we’re rubes. Or both.
In other news Wells had a concussion so bad he couldn’t see pitches when batting. Crackhead medical staff ftw
Hal, and all of them, are prisoners of a delusional echo-chamber organizational culture. He believes what he says, largely because he hears it repeated to him by all the people around him.
Go Rays Go!
Have they canceled the WS? Or did I Rip Van Winkel and miss it?
This is almost as exciting as that time in the seventies when we almost converted to the metric system.
I think it IS worth pointing out that the Mets went out and did what people have been asking the Yankees to do and replace Cashman with one of the “best” executives out there. The Mets got David Stearns, the guy behind this current World Series Brewers team, and he’s been terrible with the Mets.
Is it, though, Brian? This was once a statistics-oriented site, and pointing out what happens to the Mets right now is to suggest the enormous significance of a sample size of one, and cherry-picked sample, at that.
Yes, it’s certainly possible to make changes and have them work out badly, or to just screw them up. Neither of those things is absolutely excluded from the realm of possibility, no one suggested that they were.
But if, instead of choosing one isolated case, you look at all the teams that succeed… how many of them leave the entire governing structure in place when it fails to win over a long stretch of time – unless your manager’s name is Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy and he happens to own the team? My guess is that successful teams continually adjust. Sometimes, as with these Mets, it goes sour. But at least they’re trying! And that leads to success more often than, you know – not trying.
Kirschner Mentioned in here that there is a big disparity between how receptive the Yankees’ pitchers are with analytics compared to their hitters.
Been talking about this for a while on @pamsson’s and my podcast: patreon.com/cw/TheViewsfro…
Fascinating. And also really pathetic.
I think it really trickles down from Judge. He is a naturally talented hitter, so their various hitting coaches don’t affect HIM that much, and so he doesn’t care about any of it, but as a result, it seems like that influence affects his lesser teammates.
Judge just always sounds like a dumb guy. Hiding his injury was a dumb move. Insisting on DJ LeMahieu remaining with the team in 2023 was dumb. Everything the guy says sounds so dumb.
Here’s a major issue. There were only 32 batters in the Majors this season who got on base at a .360 clip or better. Only ONE hitter got on base at a .400 clip, and only two got on at a .390 or better clip.
The Yankees clearly need more OBP. They were a HORRENDOUS .311 team OBP. This is a team that long made OBP a big part of what they did, and it WORKED.
But the free agents out there aren’t OBP guys. The exceptions are Bauers (obviously no one wants a Bauers reunion) and two outfielders (Arozerana and Suzuki) who likely don’t have a role on this squad with Judge, Belli, and Jones in the outfield.
Ty France also technically fits, but come on, we all know that’s fluky as fuck, and he’s just another first baseman, anyways.
The highest OBP from a free agent 2B or 3B is Arraez at .345, which isn’t even that great.
But fuck, it’d have been the third-highest OBP on the Yankees last season!
So I think they really should try to add Arraez to this squad.
Arraez 2B .345 OBP
Rice 1B .363 OBP
Judge RF .360 OBP (playing injured for a MONTH)
Belli LF .338 OBP
That opening to the lineup gives you a real chance to score some runs. If they have to deal Garcia Jr. elsewhere to make room for Arraez (who is, of course, another lefthanded hitter), then so be it. They didn’t give up anything of note for him.
Arraez also brings elite contact to the team. I think contact is overrated in general, but I think there’s something to be said for having at least one elite contact guy on the team. The 1990s Yankees were FILLED with elite contact guys who were good at other things, too (Jeter, Bernie, and O’Neill to name the three biggest examples). That is the perfect thing to have, of course, but fuck, at least have ONE elite contact hitter on the team!
Interesting. I wonder whether getting one guy is how you compensate for a non-OBP team. As opposed to reconceiving the offense as a whole, something that better describes the team’s change FROM an OBP-focused team to what it is right now. Throwing one decent-OBP guy onto a team that lacks that talent from top do bottom might really do very little…. in fact, without Garcia (who, admittedly, I really like), it might be worse.
But it might be better, I’m not arguing either side, just thinking about it. Maybe someone here knows studies have something to say about this kind of thing?
I think Cashman has wanted high OBP guys, he just couldn’t get them. He tried to trade for Brian Reynolds in 2023 (and I think he even had a deal done, but Reynolds instead agreed on a long-term deal with Pittsburgh to keep them from trading him, so they did that instead). He tried to trade for Yandy in 2024. LeMahieu WAS a high on-base guy before the injuries took him. Judge, of course, is one of the highest OBP guys in the league (and a healthy Judge would have kept the Yankees from having such a pathetic team OBP).
OBP wasn’t available, but SLG was, so he got Garcia.
Yes, sure, that’s plausible. Maybe he WANTED a different team than he was able to construct. Of course, in this biz, failure is failure, he could have traded and wheeled and dealed and done what was necessary if he has a vision he was intent on achieving..
But either way, that’s just about what he may or may not have wanted, and that doesn’t bear much upon the question of whether “getting a guy” (or two) and “reconfiguring the team” are equivalent (or not equivalent, again, I’m not sure what the right answer is).
I don’t see Garcia as a good fit. His defense at 2B is horrendous and I don’t want Rice to be an everyday DH. And then the Iceman (Stanton) comets, maybe.
Giving Cashman 5 more years is a slow-motion rearranging of the deck chairs on the Titanic.
i feel like it’s more like having the orchestra play on the deck than rearranging the chairs.
Cash is Svengali to Hal’s Trilby
I had almost forgotten that foolishness. Almost.
cashman back, the cody contract begins to look, what next?
What about the Cody contract? I’m not even disagreeing, I just don’t know what you’re referencing.
i am very pessimistic about it. it’s the next dj/ hicks.
