The Yankees opened a six-game West Coast road trip on a sour note Monday night, dropping a 10-1 contest to the Angels.
Fresh off taking three of four from the Red Sox to lock up homefield advantage in a potential AL Wild Card Series matchup, New York missed an opportunity to gain ground on the division-leading Rays. The loss leaves the Yankees trailing Tampa Bay by 4 1/2 games in the American League East.
The story of the night centered on top pitching prospect Elmer Rodríguez. Rated as New York’s No. 3 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, the 23-year-old right-hander made his second Major League start since being recalled on Wednesday — in his fifth stint with the Yankees this season — to fill the rotation spot left by Ryan Weathers landing on the injured list.
After delivering six solid innings against the Astros last week, Rodríguez showed early flashes of that same electric repertoire on Monday. Cruising through the first three frames with just one run allowed, he reached as high as 98.1 mph with his sinker and racked up five strikeouts.However, command issues derailed his evening in a bout of two-out chaos during the bottom of the fourth inning. After quickly retiring the first two batters, Rodríguez hit Oswald Peraza and Tyler Heineman with inside breaking balls. Zach Neto followed with a run-scoring single to break the ice, and Mike Trout blew the game open with a sharp two-run single to left field.
Rodríguez was lifted after 3 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and three walks over 91 pitches.
Well, this one sure sucked. The Angels had lost so many in a row that I think we all knew that this was a classic trap game. First game on the West Coast, no off day, Elmer pitching. Let’s just hope that they got this shit out of their system now.
I still don’t quite get why Bednar pitched in this one, especially once he gave up the ninth run. Just let fucking Sanchez close it out.
One kind of cool thing is that, for perhaps the first time all season, all of the American League playoff teams are over .500. That was just kind of embarrassing there for a while.

I didn’t watch the game, but it was 10 -1, so after Elmer they were clearly behind, Bednar could never have had a lead to give up.
So I must have misunderstood your sentence.
Either way, I was shocked to see they put Bednar in a non-save-situation in a blow-out to give up a bunch of runs.
Sorry, I meant to write “when he gave up the ninth run,” which would allow Boone to use a position player.
Why bednar? Because boone is an idiot.
Also the yanks did not clinch home field advantage…that’s only if they end up tied. This is what happens when AI writes stories or when someone human writes it at 1 AM.

Re: Jazz, Bednar’s workload is a bit of a red herring. Jazz was right to steal there because the Yankees’ bullpen can easily blow a 6 run lead and a playoff tiebreak was on the line. It’s a better look for Boone to say “anyone can give up 2 runs” in public than it is to say “my team sucks enough to give up 8 runs in an inning”.

I don’t know, I don’t think that’s a worry. The best teams can have a bad inning. Comebacks happen. The idea that the Yanks should stop trying to win seems absurd to me. The idea that they can prevent Jazz from stealing not by throwing him out by not holding him on (and trying to make him feel guilty about it) is preposterous..
I think we agree, Pete – I just think Boone felt it would make his bullpen feel better to say that they might give up 2 runs, rather than to say that they might give up 7 or 8.

I can get behind that. It’s pretty obvious that Grisham had an anomalous offensive season last year. His defense has been regressing and he doesn’t have the bat for a corner spot. The QO was a gamble by Cashman, and one that I’m not critical of. It was a good gamble. His other moves he’s made are what have them hamstrung a little.
Best case/Wishful scenario, Yostin Pena rockets up through the minors and is playing CF in 2028. Jones is perfectly cromulent for a year or two while they figure out what they will do.
