Jake Bennett (#64, 25, LHP, 8-6, 3.49) vs. Carlos Rodón (#55, 33, LHP, 4-2, 3.15)

Boone is only SORT of taking the lefty opener bait, as he is MOSTLY starting his lefthanded lineup, only with Ramos in place of Belli, who is getting a bit of a rest.
Sucks to suck for Justin Topa, who pitched well here, but they needed the roster spot for Fried. I imagine they’re telling Topa, “We will bring you right back after Elmer Rodriguez pitches on Monday, but we need his roster spot for him to pitch that game, so we have to let you go right now.”
I can’t get TOO worked up about how much they suck against lefties when they’re going to get one of the greatest righthanded bats in Major League history back in a few weeks. It sucks to suck now, though, of course.
Game 1
P Goldschmidt (R) 1B
B Rice (L) DH
A Rosario (R) 2B
H Ramos (R) RF
C Bellinger (L) LF
G Lombard Jr. (R) SS
J Caballero (R) 3B
S Jones (L) CF
A Sánchez (R) C
Three hits against their worst starter and their secondary pen. We used our best relievers. O/U runs .5, hits 4.5.
This offense especially looks like garbage against LHPs. Really think PGold and Heliot are going to do anything?
Heliot (679) for Grichuk (856) who hangs up first? I know there’s always a rationale for Cash’s decisions. But why do so many seem to end up so badly.
Kriske over Whitlock.
Rowson has taught the team to be guess hitters rather than as ONeill has said think fastball than adjust.
Good send. Not exactly a bang bang play at home. No thanks we didnt want 2nd and third one out with Cody up. Sure if Sanchez was up, send him.
Cone and Kay with a good analysis of what went wrong on the play at home.
Then an error by Rosario and a play that could’ve been made by Cabby then a terrible passed ball by Sanchez.
Fuck Ryan McMahon for that idiotic base running blunder that landed him on the IL and made the defense even worse.
This is a monumentally stupid team.
Good to see WOE is alive and well. And so much more as well.
Put bottom of the 4th and top of the 5th in a time capsule. Bad baserunning, a bad send caused by the baserunner, an error, a play that should’ve been made, a passed ball by a catcher that should’ve be in the minors. And a team that can’t hit even with Bellinger back,
Topa in ina 2 run game, waiving the flag
Being awful at fundamentals is a part of who they are. Cashman sees no problems. Hal sees nothing but the $$$,
Ramos is just putrid.
I don’t get it. Went back and watched the out at home plate.
It had to be perfect to get him, and it was.
With one out Rosario needed to stay halfway and not go back to tag. The play wasn’t as close as yesterday with Cody. A good throw gets him. With 2out it’s a send, with one out and Cody up it’s not.
Look at the other team fouling off pitches until they get one to at least hit pretty well somewhere.
Cone thinks well of it.
And to some post above: the difference between Ramos and Goldschmidt, besides the obvious fielding factor, is that Goldschmidt singlehandedly kept this team afloat for a month THIS SEASON, after Judge went down and before he went from white hot to ice cold.
It seems so odd to me that this game is only 2-0.
This team could be a real contender with a total revamp of its strategy, execution, and leadership.
If Cone were the manager, Posada the bench coach, O’Neill the hitting coach.
Hell, Posada as third base coach would be an improvement over the status quo.
Yes.
Nothing sums up the current offensive approach better than Wells pinch hitting to take a called strike three.
The called third strike is only part of the reason they suck at hitting.
Yeah, it’s just part of the problem with the offense – roster construction / platoon dependence being another part – but I do think the lack of a two-strike approach is a significant part of the failure to get runs across. A normal ratio is 3 swinging strikeouts for every 1 looking. Today through 8 innings the Yankees have 3 swinging and 5 looking. That’s four extra strikeouts because they don’t protect the plate. Two of those were with RISP, where a hit or an error could have scored a run.
Edit: final, 6 times looking and just 3 times swinging.
God, yes.
Happy now? 😎
Less happy, but with less cognitive dissonance.
Paul always says he looked fastball and then adjusted. If you’re always guessing you’re taking called third strikes.
If you hit weak grounders and pop ups that’s on you. If you have no approach that’s on Boone and Rowson.
Seven hits in two games. They didn’t even use Chapman
Kirschner in Spring wrote about the Yankees wanting to be more of a platoon-based team. Boone even talked to John Schneider about that
Chris Mcgonicle can’t ever remember the Yanks being this much of a “platoon” team ever in my life. In the biggest game of the year, 3 of the first 4 hitters in the lineup hardly ever play
A platoon is useful if and only if the players actually hit. Better to play the hot hand irrespective of handedness.
Of course there aren’t *any* hot hands on this team right now, but Rosario and Ramos have been worse than useless for a while.
A platoon team is a team that’s screwed after the first time they flip the line-up.
I can see why you might occasionally be forced into it, but why would you ever WANT it?
Two games, 1-run.
From Katie S —
Yankees: 23rd game with 4 or fewer than hits this season.
That’s 4th most in MLB (Reds, Mariners, Guardians have more).
But nothing could’ve been done differently
They’ve also managed 4 hits or fewer in each of their last 5 games against the Red Sox which ties a franchise record for most consecutive games with 4 hits or fewer against a single opponent (1981 Rangers). #Yankees #RepBX
The insanity of their approach to hitting wears fans down.
Yankees last games 136 BA, 056 RISP. But Boone and Rowson have nothing to do with that. Jasson and phenom in the minors, Wells with the worst year of his career, Jazz underachieving, but Boone and Rowson have nothing to do with that.
Curry For the first time in their history, three games in a row, 1 run or fewer, 5 hits or fewer, 9 strikeouts or more.
So much history-making by the team in 2026. A feather in Boone’s cap as Yankees manager. Surely the HoF will want his cap on display.
Former Mets first round pick Kelenic now a Yankee. Mets release Luis Robert.
Darn! I almost forgot there’s another game today. Wouldn’t want to miss a second of WOE. Get ‘er done.
Stupid Rays are in the middle of another one of those weird hot streaks where they just win every game. It’s crazy. It’ll be 6 in the loss column after tonight’s loss.
Schmidt 0.2 2r 2h 2k. McMahon 0-3 2K
Sounds like they’re ready.
Jazz don’t take no third strikes. He gets his moneys worth.
Yankees with the RISP Challenge.
They just constantly love to put the ball on the ground like fucking losers.
Jones should never have swung at that slop.
And so it goes
Wells being unable to do anything with that 3-1 pitch is just embarrassing as fuck.
Wells is still at 19 RBI on August 29.
Just another 0-2 w/RISP.
A foolish consistency
They outpitch us, outhit us, out homer us.
Every Max Fried start against Boston seems to be him getting beaten by a couple of solo homers.
Because this squad is cooked, time to wishcast offseason moves and next year’s lineup.
1 Rice C
2 Arraez, please, 2B
3 Judge DH
4 Garcia 1B
5 Bellinger LF
6 Jones CF
7 Arozarena, please, RF
8 McMahon 5
9 Lombard 6
Bench: Caballero (IF), Wells (BUC), other emergency BUC to be named later, and a 5th OF (Stanton? Ha ha)
I seriously doubt they are moving Rice to catcher.
Thank you, Luis Garcia Jr, for showing these scrubs the benefit of swinging at a close pitch with two strikes and runners on base.
There should be a rule that they only have to play righthanded pitchers in the playoffs.
Shit, did Lombard get hurt? Did Volpe cast some sort of spell?
They manage 3-runs, Lombard gets taken out of the game, Fried walks the leadoff batter.
Hoch says Lombard tweaked his right knee during an AB.
What the Yankees have 3.
And Lombard his hurt.
Blackburn is a boss
It truly can’t be “Save us every fucking game, Paul Blackburn.”
Please don’t strike out or hit a weak grounder, Spencer.
Thank goodness they’re keeping it in the air tonight.
Phil Collins would make a decent DH.
I saw what you did.
Saw it with my own two eyes.
Look at that, a homegrown Yankee with the ability to foul pitches off and drive in a run!
I get why they’re doing it this way (using Hill here), but I hate it.
Tim Hill working himself back into the COT. I like it.
A tack on run or two would be nice.
One wasted AB, thanks, Jazz.
Rosario comes through.
Wells with 2 RBI. Looks great in the box score.
Okay, so five tack-on runs it is.
Beck serving them well as the 27th man.
You can’t stop Beck you can only hope to contain him.
these guys wouldn’t shut up about the singles blah blah blah
Yay, win. No drama from Beck; thank you very much.
From Katie S —
Yankees had 13 hits — all singles — tonight vs Red Sox.
That’s their most singles without an extra-base hit in a 9-inning game since May 1, 1999 vs Royals (also 13).
Beck gets an SB save (saving Bednar)
Back to 1956 for a game that they scored 10 on all singles.
From Katie S —
Yankees scored 9 runs tonight, their most in a game without an extra-base hit since Sept 16, 1956 at Cleveland.
It’s also their most in a HOME game since June 5, 1946 vs White Sox.
I’m hoping this game reflects a conscious effort to avoid just looking at strike three, but I suspect it’s noise.
Anyway, yay win.
In case you missed it, Sarah Wilson asked a bunch of Yankees about their glove-hand positioning, as their significant others tried not to laugh and/or die of embarrassment. Tim Hill was unafraid to acknowledge the joke, and thankfully, his partner seems to share his sense of humor.
