It sure would be nice if the Yankees could take advantage of a spiraling Astros team who literally just told their manager TODAY that he won’t be back next year, and that his choice was either get fired now, or continue to manage the rest of the season and then be fired. He chose to finish the season (I imagine he thinks if they win the division and make SOME noise in the playoffs, they’ll either change their minds, or he’ll get a new job more easily).
The issue is that while the Astros starter isn’t great, the Yankees are throwing Will fucking Warren out there, who is in the middle of a miserable stretch where he’s just been terrible.
As to the trivia questions I asked. Veggie Jackson got the Top 5 Yankees in games appeared in the 2000s (Mo, Stanton, Moose, Pettite, and Scott Proctor), and four out of the five in Top 5 Yankee in RBIs in the 2020s (Judge, Stanton, Gleyber, and DJ) and four out of the top five in Top 5 Yankees in wins in the 1980s (Guidry, Righetti, John, and Niekro).
The missing guys are the fifth Yankee in RBIs in the 2020s is…Anthony fucking Volpe! Crazy, right?
As for wins, the #4 Yankee in wins in the 1980s was Dennis Rasmussen, which explains why the Yankees rarely made the playoffs in the 1980s.
It’s Will Warren Day! Meaning multiple baserunners for the opposition in the first inning. Get that pitch count up early, Will.
Yep error by Lombard. Garcia should’ve come off the bag. But if Jazz makes the play in the first place none of that happens.
The Yankees go in order against the great Pecko.
Two innings, 40 pitches.
It’s hard to get over how much the Yankees SHOULD be winning this pitching matchup, but Warren just hates everyone.
Since the Yankees can’t score in the first why not lead off Cabby then go Wells, Jazz?
What the fuck was that throw by Belli?! Fucking Trent Grisham could have made a better throw! What the fuck, dude?!
Unusually bad throw by Cody after a passed ball by Wells and a first inning missed catch by Jazz and an error by Lombard which Garcia might’ve prevented by getting off the base and two hitless, scoreless innings against a no name pitcher. Going great so far.
Your Fundamentally Sound ™ 2026 NY Yankees.
O’Neill, “The Yankees are being patient, waiting for a good pitch to hit.” Rice then hits a pathetic popup.
All’s forgiven. First in along while.
Yep. Exactly. It’s all good. Man, what a little bit of competence in the middle of the order does to your lineup.
Welcome back, Cody.
Wells not adding to his defensive rep.
Other than hitting and fielding, Wells is doing great.
Is 7 hits and two walks in 5 a quality start?
I was wondering about the advisability of a hit and run with Garcia batting and Rice running. Not so much anymore.
That was a bullet.
I thought we would see more homers from him, but if they are all coming now, I can live with it!
Well all right!
If Judge returns, I wonder if they should try Grisham/Garcia ahead of Judge. Then Rice/Bellinger.
Nah, never mind, you need to see what Rice looks like with Judge behind him. Garcia can bat cleanup.
That’s why you don’t fucking walk the #8 hitter.
Great job, Cruz.
So glad Boone still believes in Cruz. That’s the 4th home run he’s allowed in the last 12 games, 10 innings. When relievers go bad you only use them in low leverage situations. Gotta get him going.
He’s already been knocked down to the 6th inning. I think the next step is not pitching with a lead.
Will Warren has a 1-4 record with an ERA of 6.18 and 38 strikeouts in 10 appearances in his last 10 games.
But he doesn’t miss any starts.
Cruz walks guys and gives up home runs. The other days he eras saved from a loss by a line drive with a 90% hit probability
Rays lose.
Why the fuck did Jazz not just get the lead runner?!
Another fundamental error by Jazz.puts a runner in scoring position.
I guess we shouldn’t return Garcia.
Garci with the RBI 2b .
Yankees at 7-hits, Garcia has 4 of them.
Cody fails to get the runner in from third with one out.
Rice should have scored easily on the double. The Astros almost seemed shocked he didn’t go home.
I don’t think so.
Have the Yankees scored on the contact play once in the last twelve seasons?
Tampa Yankees 55 runs last 5 games including tonight., Y Pena 358/986, Petitte 350/1335
Hopefully Boone and Rowson are long gone by the time those guys make the big leagues.
The Bosox push across the Manfred on a passed ball.
When you need Headrick, Blackburn, and Bednar to be perfect every night you’re either the 2015 Royals or you’re in trouble.
Their arms are gonna be toast.
Why was Hedrick up earlier? As Cone said you don’t get Headrick up unless you’re going to use him.
You just can’t expect your main guys to be perfect every game.
Pretty much.
Yankees making the Astros Great again.
The Marlins tie the game on a swinging strike three that would have been the third out and game over, except it was a wild pitch.
Hanner with the 6.75 era.
You really can’t despise the first six innings of pitching enough, Warren and Cruz, what a duo.
If your #5 starter goes 5 innings with 2 ER you should be happy.
I think HOW he did it was the problem. Seven hits and multiple walks is berry bad.
Hopefully we won’t see Warren starting any more meaningful games this season
After Hill and Yarb, Yankees have Cruz, Hanner, and Topa 35yo 8.05 era this season in 19 innings and 4.27 for his career
I would imagine Blackburn would pitch in a pinch.
I was including Blackburn.
Gee, thanks, Austin.
Why in the fucking WORLD didn’t Jazz steal second earlier in the at-bat?! Jazz also did a really bad job blocking the return throw from second.
Wells was turning the corner but last 7 games 150/261/200. Last 15 216/310/297.
The Bosox get a grand slam in the 11th and are poised to win. The Yankees are poised to lose.
Gee, what an AB from Grisham.
Not only is Hader awesome, but he’s also a lefty and the Yankees best hitters are ALL lefties. This is going to be a brutal ninth.
Still, why in the world didn’t Jazz steal second?!
Could’ve used Ramos there.whats he saving Ramos for?
Yeah, fair point. Jazz should have also stolen second. Then the Wells ground ball moves him to third instead of being a double play.
Also, for however bad this loss is, I mean, come the fuck on, Headrick can’t give up THREE fucking runs, ya know? Hopefully it will be like that Blackburn loss, where Blackburn gave up two home runs out of nowhere, but went back to normal his next outing.
I imagine Hanner is getting DFA’ed very soon.
Boone is using these guys so much, though, because a Will Warren can’t even go six innings. Warren has thrown 18.1 innings in his last four starts.
Yeah, Warren has been terrible.
I wonder if this changes their plan to have ERC pitch tomorrow.
Also, the Marlins closer getting hurt the same time the Red Sox come to town to play close late games each game is quite annoying.
Yankees have some bad players but we’re stuck with Wells who doesn’t even hit home runs any more.
Wells has 19 RBI. Historically bad.
Boy. It sure does suck to suck.
Odds the Bosox tie the Yankees in August.
Well that was fucking hideous
We’ll be lucky to go 2-4 the rest of the week, 50-50 we’ll be in third by Sunday.
Warren can’t even average 5 innings a start.
18.1 innings in his last four starts.
A game and a half behind Boston in the pythag
Boston used 5 relievers over 5.2i with no earned runs.
Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-4, 3 K. Dominguez has struck out 12 times in his last eight games (4-for-31).
https://tomkosensky.com/2026/08/25/yankees-milb-8-25-somerset-wins-a-wild-one/
I think sometimes he doesn’t give a shit. He hit 159 in the Arizona Fall League, a hitters league, after hitting 306. This year in the DR he hit 184 in the DR, 307/874 at Scranton in April
Saw this elsewhere.
Luis Gil since transitioning to a bullpen role in the minor leagues:
6.2 IP, 4 H, 8 SO, 0 ER, .167 BAA
Fastball has gotten up to 97.6 MPH. A name to watch for the potential playoff bullpen. Gil could be a dominant force in a one inning role.
“Yankees making the Astros Great again.”
Does playing the Yankees amount to cheating?
“Hopefully Boone and Rowson are long gone by the time those guys make the big leagues.”
Veggie, it’s only baseball. Not good to wish fatal car crashes upon people.
“Hopefully we won’t see Warren starting any more meaningful games this season”
That’s a real possibility… if the Yankees quickly fall out of contention.
