It’s all kind of academic, since Will Warren will get his ass kicked against such a good lineup, but man, while I would prefer to send Volpe down (as the Yankees don’t need two shortstops who are basically the same guy, so just keep one and send the other to the minors, and since Cabby can play every other position in a pinch, you’re better off keeping him), at the very least, you might need to send Schuemann down just so that Boone will stop starting him every other fucking game!
Spencer Jones would help the lineup a hell of a lot more than Max fucking Schuemann.
It’s annoying that Cavalli’s suspension was reduced by just enough so that he could face the Yankees and kick their ass (as if they can’t hit the BAD pitchers, they surely aren’t hitting against the Nationals’ one GOOD pitcher).
Damn, Grisham gave that one a jolt and it didn’t even reach the warning track.
Cavalli is too good. They have no chance against a decent pitcher.
Schlittler declines to pitch in the ASG. I don’t love it.
It’s possible that Schneider told him he was starting Cease. This way Cam could save face.
Even if that’s the case, I don’t love it. And I don’t love Wheeler whinging about being snubbed and refusing to tap in.
I think there’s a net positive effect to guys taking these things seriously and taking pride in being asked to play. (Or at least having the shame to pretend like they do.)
That right there is what you get by being cute.
“Let me try to get them to swing at pitches out of the zone. No? Okay, I guess I will either throw it in the zone and get crushed or walk the guy.”
Will Warren will never be any good. Best you can hope for is a so so fifth starter.
It’s a miracle we’re not looking at avoiding the sweep today. Sixteen unimpressive offensive innings and two good innings against their dregs of a pen.
But that’s the Nationals team, right? Their bullpen sucks. That’s a known problem. So it wasn’t, like, a fluke that they beat up on their bad bullpen.
Let’s see another Yankee turn a 3-0 count into an out.
Surprisingly a walk!
Jazz takes so many swings that look like he has no idea how to swing a bat.
Shit, that was some awful luck.
Martian batting 3rd 240/698 is proof that this offense sucks, Yankees with one hitter over 800 (900), two more over 700. Nats with a 900+, 2 at 800+, 2 at 700+.
The Nationals have a very good offense, so they’re a weird comparison.
“The Yankees’ offense sucks, they’re not as good as the best offense in baseball!”
You’re right. They’re not good period. The Martian is hitting 3rd.
Belli was batting third last year with a .600 OPS. In other words, obviously they think the Martian is better than his current numbers. He’s been hitting better lately, no?
The Cabby experience sure is a frustrating one at times.
22 steals, 9 CS. What’s the verdict.
The biggest issue is that of those 9 CS, at least three of them were just him being a dumb fuck on the bases and getting picked off.
I get Wood is scary, but that was still an awfully wimpy at-bat by Warren.
Gotta fucking elevate, Grisham. If you hit it on the ground, you’re fucked.
That’s where the ABS is kind of cheap. That pitch has NEVER been called a strike ever.
Friday 2 runs thru 8, Saturday no runs thru 7, none so far today.
Last 30 days Yankees 23rd in runs, last 15 days 25th. Thats weak.
Oh, they’ve obviously been horribly slumping. No doubt about it. Part of that, though, was playing without two of their regulars who were actually hitting a bit (Grisham and McMahon). This current lineup should be a lot better than what we are seeing.
That was some BULLSHIT. Wells thought that the umpire had called the obvious strike three strike three, so didn’t challenge it, but the umpire HADN’T called it a strike, and since Wells didn’t challenge it in time thinking that the umpire had called the obvious trike a strike, he couldn’t challenge it. The batter then fucking doubled.
It turned out to be no harm, no foul in the end.
Speaking of lucky DPs.
Yep, that definitely cancels out my complaint about the Jazz DP, for sure.
Jazz with a RISP is never any good.
Jazz has been a menace to himself AND Ruiz in this at-bat.
Turns out that Jazz just needed to hit himself to make him be in so much pain he couldn’t concentrate on sucking.
Nice instincts by Jazz to get to second there. It’s Wells, though, so it won’t matter.
Wells told me to shut the fuck up!
Hit and Runz
If you get Ruiz, do you IBB Wood?
Imagine a lineup so good that their .774 OPS catcher is batting NINTH.
The Yankees sub-.500 OPS catcher doesn’t even bat ninth!
So yeah, Schlittler isn’t pitching because Schneider was going with his guy over Schlittler. Schneider didn’t let Schlittler save face, though, as he made a point of saying Schlittler wasn’t going to start no matter what. Seems like a bit of a dick move. You don’t have to say anything.
Do NOT like the use of Tim Hill here. It’s the same exact setup for when he fucked Weathers on Friday.
Jesus fucking Christ, Boone, shockingly, the same setup led to the same fucking result!
I get that the bullpen is tired, but if you have to use Hill, use him for the later batters, the guy who AREN’T home run threats!
It appears Hill is toast. Boone will be the last to notice.
It really is bizarre how he acts like he isn’t washed. If you HAVE to use him, have him pitch against the non home run hitters. Bringing him in for 2-3-4 was just mind-numbingly stupid.
The real key, though, is that, as we’ve noted, the Yankees bullpen has been good overall because Boone has to throw the same guys out there CONSTANTLY to cover up for the other, bad pitchers. So, when those guys are unavailable, you’re basically fucked.
Also, not for nothing, but why couldn’t Warren have just pitched the sixth? He had only thrown 83 pitches through five.
Wasn’t his lane
ESPECIALLY with a short bullpen today.
Pulling Cavalli seems to be a good thing for the Yankees (not that they’ll score off of anyone, but they’re MORE likely to score off of a reliever).
Katie S Tim Hill This Season
July: 3 HR, 17 battters faced
March-June: 3 HR, 128 batters faced
Now 4/20
Boone is condemned to repeat the past
Or rather we are
Jesus fucking Christ, Jazz. Just the dumbest fucking error possible there.
They haven’t even officially called it an error yet! It was OBVIOUSLY an error!
Okay, now they’ve called it an error.
What a bad challenge by Wells.
Devin Williams is in the midst of fucking the Yankees again. He just walked the base loaded in the ninth inning with one out with the Red Sox trailing 2-0.
Rosario is just an instant strikeout these days.
Infield defense is almost as bad as the hitting, and hitting is the pits 25th in runs. Jazz has been so shit. He hits a home run and he thinks he’s Alomar.
What was the error?
Jazz made a great play to get to the ball, but then made a terrible throw over Rice’s head. And he wasn’t even rushing! It was bizarre to see.
And Devin officially shit the bed, blowing the save, so now the Mets can lose in extras.
I want the Red Sox to lost but seeing DevW blow another save makes me happy.
BENNY BOY!
Come on, Tyrone Taylor, you owe us one!
A Rice triple! Two RBI. Nice.
He legit could have had an inside-the-park home run had he been running hard out of the box.
And, of course, YES is showing us the replay while Dominguez is popping up. Awful job by YES.
Then Jasson pops out to the pitcher on the first pitch.
Superstar
Now who comes in?
Jasson had to make the pitcher throw a strike, instead he swings at that one.
I do not like switching out Rice
I actively HATE it.
Blackburn has become a weapon
He really has. Presumably he pitches the ninth, right?
Mets about to be swept.
Another big hot while I’m on GS. Three days in a row.
The Nationals manager is sticking with this guy for a crazy amount of at-bats, right?
Mets officially swept. Jesus, Mets.
Why does MLB allow managers to check first on video replay to see if they want to challenge?
Shoulda let the RF catch it
100%.
What does a bunt even ACHIEVE there?! What a moronic bunt by Schuemann, even if he is called safe, and he’s probably going to be called out.
And yep, he’s out. Terrible, terrible idea.
Have to be impressed by that Volpe AB, not.
It just makes too much sense to send Volpe down for Jones. Why won’t they just do the sensical thing?!
Blackburn with a great two innings for the save.
As YC notes, he has become a true weapon. You have to wonder how many games were lost earlier in the season by not trusting Blackburn in high leverage at ALL?
Funny tweet, “Yankees $2 million closer Paul Blackburn held a 2-run lead against the offense who has scored the most runs this season”
Bullpen besides Hill was better than Washington’s this series, eh?
The Rays lost.
That’s really the only AL East team the Yankees should really be concerned with. Three back to end the first half. Not awful.
I don’t agree. The Yankees main obstacle is the Yankees, Boston’s on a roll and the Jays have some good players.
This rope a dope won’t continue to succeed.
I mean, of course your team should inherently always be your concern, but sure, yes, they should be worried about themselves and the Rays.
The Yankees are 12 games over .500 and the Red Sox are two games under .500, and the Blue Jays will be, at BEST, four games under .500. Why worry about them right now?
Schlittler backtracking like crazy on whether he will pitch in the All Star Game.
Boston is an MLB best 12-2 since June 25th.
Yankees draft Luke Pettitte, Andy’s son. He’s a 2-way player.
https://tomkosensky.com/2026/07/12/yankees-milb-7-12-xavier-rivas-tosses-6-hitless-innings/
I think they have to bring up Spence for phenom or Schumann and platoon him with PGold.
They ABSOLUTELY should send Volpe down for Jones. It just doesn’t make sense to NOT do that.
Politics.
Weaver 1.85 era, Devin 4.83 IS Kyra Sedgwick.
A reporter asked Boone if Blackburn reminded him of Weaver, and he, was, like, “Huh?” As obviously, as good as Blackburn has been, he’s a MUCH different pitcher than Weaver.
How come the CONDENSED GAME is also just highlights. It used to be the last pitch of every at bat.
Stop editing and just give me the facts, you bastards!
I mean, that’s the whole difference between the condensed game and the highlights, right?
100% agreed. The condensed game is getting really shitty.
Now, let’s hope Boone doesn’t overuse Blackburn.
Looking forward to Cashman trading the farm for the Nationals’ vaunted bullpen.
No games until Friday. Then it is a weekend of BS with the Dodgers in the Bronx.
Remember those heatmaps like 16 years ago that illustrated how awesome Mo was at pitch placement? What if there were something similar that illustrated how good Cam is at tunnelling his pitches?
This video gets really interesting about 7 minutes in. In addition to exploring how Schlittler’s stuff has improved this year vs last, the guy defines a couple new (admittedly kinda arbitrary) metrics that he argues show Schlittler is the best in MLB at tunnelling; and then he shows some animations of Schlittler’s average pitch trajectories to illustrate how similar Schlittler’s various pitches look up till the batter’s “decision point” about 200ms in flight, and how far they then diverge.

I have no issue if Cam doesn’t want to pitch in the ASG. It’s not an insult to the fans – we didn’t vote for him – and he doesn’t owe Schneider anything.
If Manfred wants the All Star Game to mean something to the players again, then he can abandon interleague play.
Amen.
