  1. Waiting to see the Yankee rookie list of “best first 8 starts”. Whitey Ford? Mel Stotlemyer? Stan Bahnsen?

Skenes has the second lowest ERA all time after 50 starts. (Vida Blue)

    1. Yeah I saw that; but that’s picking and choosing.

Mel Stot pitched 2 CG SO as a rookie with an overall 2.06 ERA. 177+ ERA

Whitey Ford had three straight CG wins allowing a total of 13 hits and 1 run. 153+ ERA

Bahnsen threw 267 innings with a 140+ ERA.

6 innings and 8 Ks and no runs in two starts? I’m really happy for him and us! But I’d like a deeper dive into how good he’s doing. Last year Gil had 3 starts in a row of 6, 6 and 8 innings with 14(!), 8 and 9 Ks. But oh yeah he gave up a run twice. When these writers pick and choose the stat they can make buddy biancalana and babe Ruth look similar. (With some mix of doubles, stolen bases, and whatever.)

    2. Nobody pitches complete games any more and to compare him to Ford the all time Yankee greatest pitcher is unfair. He needs to cut down on the walks, his FIP is only 4.2. Another Yankee starter in his first 6 games, 5 starts pitched to a 10.32 era. With a 99mph fastball and a developing curve he could be a thing.

    3. No doubt. I think Schlitty has been great. I think I’d use him in the playoffs as it seems he has shown a smaller propensity to blow up as compared to some of the others. I was simply noting that it’s 8 starts and finding some combination of something to make him the “first ever” is to me meaningless. Especially strike outs in a game when people are striking out more than ever. But sure his grade so far is A.

  2. You probably don’t pull Jazz from the lineup during his little hot streak, right? So what’s the lineup?

    Goldschmidt 1B
    Rice C
    Judge DH
    Bellinger CF
    Stanton RF
    Jazz 2B
    Rosario 3B
    Grisham CF
    Volpe SS

Something like that? Or DO you just sit Jazz?

    1. It got me rabbit-holing to this article in the NYT from ’92 where Coney said …

“I’m sure some people will remain skeptical about me. I like the night life. If that’s being reckless, I’m guilty. But have I been reckless from a financial standpoint? No. Have I been reckless in life style? No, or I would have broken down by now. And I’m just not going to defend myself as to whether I have been reckless sexually. I’m not running for public office. I’m trying to get the Mets to the World Series.”

… which is insanely erudite for a 29-year-old ballplayer in the midst of the biggest scumbag clubhouse that we’re aware of.

    1. Rice I’m okay with resting especially if he’s going to be the primary catcher
