From Bryan Hoch:
Yankees right-hander Luis Gil has been selected as Baseball Digest’s 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, the publication announced on Thursday.
Gil finished ahead of the Orioles’ Colton Cowser and the Athletics’ Mason Miller in the AL voting, which was comprised of an 11-person panel of baseball writers and broadcasters. The Pirates’ Paul Skenes was selected as Baseball Digest’s NL Rookie of the Year.
Cowser has the actual American League Rookie of the Year locked up, but it’s SOMEthing, I guess. Gil developing into a true #2 next year would be a huge boon for the Yankees (and if they somehow acquire another #2, then wow, their rotation could be dominant next year with Rodon and Schmidt the #4 and #5 starters).
I hate being reminded about how Wells’ miserable last month cost him RoY.
It might have cost the Yankees a title, as well, by going from great to awful.
It was certainly an element of that. He did start looking better as the post season went on. If only they hadn’t pissed away 2 winnable games in the WS…
It was so awful. And then he carried it into the post season. One night he hits a double and HR against the Dodgers, and it’s like, hey, he found his stroke. The next day, he goes 0-4 with 3 K’s.
Schmidt can definitely be every bit as good as Gil. He pretty much WAS as good or better than Gil for most of the season, until he got hurt and Gil kept going.
Also, is it a fact that Cowser has that RoY wrapped up if he didn’t win this one?
Why would that be?
(I didn’t even realize there were two of them!)
The BBWAA one counts for the team getting an extra pick at the end of round 1.

Because Gil spent a year+ on the ML IL, he wouldn’t have been eligible for the draft pick though.
I don’t know what’s going to happen but for the first 40/50% of the season he was just about the best pitcher in the league. I think his upside is higher than Schmidt’s but he’s also more likely to flame out than Schmidt.
What happened to Wells? Have the Yankees ruined him even to a greater degree than Volpe?
They HAVE to figure this thing out. It’s KILLING them.
Can Blake do offense?
Boone back.
At least they didnt offer him an extension…….yet
“Aaron Boone will return for an eighth season as New York Yankees manager after the team exercised his 2025 option on Friday.
Boone has led the Yankees to a 603-429 record, three AL East titles and one pennant.”
However unlike other multi term managers like Stengel, Torre and Girardi, Boone has a losing record in post season play, has never won a series against a non AL Central team, and won only 20% of the World Series Games he managed
None of that matters.
It’s as if you had to judge by results, which reflect everything every player does, the front office, the manager – that’s no way to judge a manager. It’s like judging players only by RBIs. It’s worse than that.
Anyone who actually watches Boone manage knows the truth. He’s not a bad manager. He’s the worst manager any of us has ever seen, and by a wide margin. He’s a cross his time has to bear and overcome every single game they play.
