  1. Okay, you could argue that call, and yes, they guy didn’t call it the previous time around, but WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO REMEMBERING THAT WITH TWO STRIKES YOU HAVE TO PROTECT THE STRIKE ZONE, foul of close pitches if you’re not sure? It’s like they never HEARD of the idea!

  2. I’m okay with saying that a series doesn’t begin till the home team loses a game, because then I can pretend the 2001 WS never happened and therefore the Yankees didn’t lose.

  3. I *LOVE* when that happens. He’s a superstar, most beloved player here everywhere, outside of Cleveland they didn’t he’s a STAR, but he’s superman… and he strikes out for the first out of the game for them. Nice.

  4. Three guys in not even two games? How does this not reflect on Boone? And where was the first base coach to not scream at Trevi to stay close to the bag?

  5. I think the Berti move was really some classic overthinking by Boone. Rizzo is hot, and he’s obviously quite used to playing against lefties.

Plus, maybe Rizzo makes the play on Rocchio (no way, but maybe!).

    1. Absolutely. Rizzo looked good Tuesday. Put Berti at 3b or LF, Jazz has been terrible at the plate and Berti’s probably better defensively.

  6. Jazz really shining in the post season, 120/434. Once you get past Stanton nothing gives the pitcher a second thought. Jazz, Berti, Volpe, Verdugo,Trevino- has any Yankee post season team ever had a worse 5-9 than those 5?

  7. Yankees are under 500 against LHPs. Cash roster construction. We really could’ve used a RHB to sub for Verdugo or Rizzo and now Jazz who inexplicably can not be subbed for. Jazz career 801 vs RHPs, 645 against LHPs.

  8. Rizzo hits better than Jazz vs LHPs, Rizzo is better defensively than Berti at 1B, Berti hits better than Jazz vs LHPs, Berti is better defensively at 3b than Jazz.

    QED

    1. When they were already ahead in the game. Let’s see him do it when trailing and ties a game or puts them ahead. This is like 8 straight post season series he’s struggled, the last decent one was the 2019 ALDS with an 872 OPS.

  9. He’s not a first baseman, he’s a third baseman. Play him the fuck over Jazz who isn’t hitting for shit. Why is Boone such a moron even when it comes to obvious shit.
Rizzo’s and Berti better against a LHP offensively and defensively than Jazz and Berti.

  10. Berti another Cash off the garbage heap find, 200/473 for the playoffs. Cash loves them over 30 players who aren’t very good and have no upside.

    1. Remember Tampa when he used Mike Ford hitting 150 to pinch hit instead of Clint Frazier who was having a big year 900 OPS.

    2. Every game this series has been worse than the last. It’s really been an incredible run of incomprehensible incompetence

  11. I mean, it’s late in the game, and they have two challenges.
Kind of lame, but what’s the downside?
And just imagine if they’d overturned it!

    1. “One of the most inexplicably bad decisions I’ve ever seen.”
All in a day’s work for Aaron Boone.

  12. i believe in Kahnle. he had kwan struck out. guy has it. why does boone always have to try to prove something? i kind of thought he was done with this shit.

    1. I really don’t get why they don’t just lead Soto off like how Ohtani leads off. Don’t they WANT Soto and Judge to get the most possible at-bats?

  13. WHY to they try to eyeball it WITH TWO STRIKES?
    Time after time after time.
If it were mechanical, fine – you can read that. But umps are inconsistent. FOUL THOSE PITCHES OFF!

  14. I don’t think he was tired. I think he was feeling the pressure. That’s what it looked like.
Once it was tied… look at THOSE pitches. He could have done that to those two.

  15. They’re gonna lose this game now. That they managed just 1 run when they had a chance to seal the game and couldn’t get a hit from any one of 3 guys, for a second run.

  16. Why would he feel the pressure now after so much success, especially up two. I don’t buy it. Maybe he’s tired. Maybe he just made some bad pitches, it happens. I don’t buy he felt the pressure.

    1. You saw it with Thomas and then with Gimenez. He got ahead 0-2 on Thomas, then just dicked around until it was 3-2 and he had to give him something to hit. Then with Gimenez, he just went right after him and struck him out on three pitches.

    1. No, they earned the loss. Miserable RISP fail struck again. That is why I wasn’t thrilled with a mere sac fly in the 9th.

  17. And there it is. This series has completely changed, even though it is Yankees up 2 games to 1. Boone’s overuse of Weaver will be the takeaway.

The Yankees don’t handle adversity well. Odds are they lose Friday, and we get to 2-2.

    1. Yeah, don’t agree. Wasn’t a problem for Goose. Wasn’t a problem for Mariano setting up for Wetteland.
And after the game was tied, he blew the next guy away.
You just saw him suddenly get scared of the strike zone all of a sudden.

    2. maybe. right now Weaver is not Goose or Mo. He’s a guy with good stuff that people haven’t seen a lot of

    3. Everyone’s not Mo or Gossage. He’s a guy who was never much who’s on a hot streak. Is he for real? Maybe.

    4. I’m not saying he’s those guys, I’m saying that a bunch of 2-inning saves isn’t a catastrophic, unbearable burden.
Lots of guys used to do it. I really have no doubt that it could (and should) be done more often today, tod.
And looking at that inning, it doesn’t look like he was gassed.
It looks exactly like he got scared of the strike zone for a couple of batters.

  18. After Volpe struck out I tapped out.Cant expect to score off guys like Avila who didn’t even make the ALDS roster.

Two strikes, two outs, up two, bottom of the 9th. I’m guessing the worst playoff loss in Yankee history.

    1. Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS. Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS. Obviously Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. Game 5 of the 1995 ALDS. Game 5 of the 1997 ALDS. Heck, just against Cleveland, there was the midgies game and the Knoblauch game.

    2. In ’15 when the Yankees lost to Houston in the WC play-in they went to war with Chris Young, Chase Headley and Rob Refsnyder.

I’m not sure this lineup is even on the first page of results for “worst Yankee postseason lineup.”

    3. Game 4 they were up 1 in the 9th, lost in the 12th. Game 5 they lost a 2 run lead in the 8th, lost in the 14th. 2001 they were only up 1. Those losses were more meaningful but not as statistically improbable as up 2, 2 strikes, 2 out no one on, and no Ramirez hitting.

    1. Weaver’s been used a lot, too much, probably. Assuming a Yankees lead is also asking a lot. They just can’t hit with RISP.

  19. With Gil going they’ll need a lot of pitchers.

And a lot of runs. Which is why I said above, it will be tied at 2-2 in games. They need to show me at least that they have some balls. It will be way too easy for them to sag after tonight and Gil starting.

  20. Yankees hitting 147 with RISP for the playoffs, 1-8 tonight, that’s the worst of any team still in the playoffs. Going into tonight Cleveland 224, Mets 284, Dodgers 313. Of the teams who weren’t swept in 2 only Detroit was worse.
When there’s a man in scoring position does anyone expect a good outcome? RISP 2 outs before tonight they were hitting 121.

    1. Nope, the best one can hope for is a sac fly. Soto failed in the 9th with a man on 3rd and 2 outs. Two out RISP hits are a big deal, but the Yankees don’t have it in them.

  21. I think it was still a good sign for them that they came back and scored those four late runs in this one. They’ll be confident against Clase now. Yes, the Guardians will be confident against Weaver and Holmes, as well, but them’s the breaks.

  22. I don’t know. That was a great game, and they lost it. Those Judge and Stanton home runs were incredible. And they actually tacked on a run.
Also, seriously, Volpe’s looked good. And Rizzo was hitting well, although I can’t believe his defense tonight, all of a sudden. And Stanton’s been great. And Gleyber’s been great. If you add Soto and Judge, that’s 6 positions hitting. If Wells and Chishom can start hitting even just a little…

    1. Volpe is having a good series but he struck out agains Avila in the 10th with the go ahead run on at second. Gleyber is 1-8 in the playoffs. Except for Soto the rest of the team has been useless RISP.

    2. Yeah, the loss hurts, but it was a good game. The Yankees got to Clase, that’s huge.

  23. Look, you let Kahnle go one more and then Weaver comes in for a fresh inning, game over.

I’m telling you he had that guy.

I didn’t see the previous inning but the 2b was bullshit

    he got two outs

kwan had struck out but the ump blew it

    he was fine.

Now who is going to pitch tomorrow? Kahle X Weaver X Holmes X

    sucks

  24. It was an exciting and exhausting game. But the Yankees weren’t great. Trevino got picked off first. Volpe ran into an out but Cleveland blew the run down and Ramirez dropped the ball. Yankee first basemen had 3 or 4 misplays. The Yankees were 1/8 RISP and before the Judge home run hitters were 1/20. Wells can’t even make contact any more, Holmes and Weaver had been great, but not tonight. And Boone was Boone.

    1. they’ll be the 15th team to come back from 3-1, book it. Teams of destiny always destine.

  25. Brutal loss, but I fear what will get lost in all of this is … how absolutely insanely Boone is managing this series. It pushes the boundaries of rational thinking. I feel like we’re in a Twilight Zone episode and the manager is purposely trying to make any possible move to make his team fail.

Yeah, the baserunning sucks and yeah, the RISP hitting is atrocious … but Boone’s “managing” is worse than all of that combined.

But hey, it’s not like anyone could have predicted Holmes would cost them a postseason game if used in a close game … oh wait, I did. And any other rational person watching a season where he blew 13 saves would have. Sadly, that wasn’t even in the top 5 boneheaded moves Boone made in this game. I really hope they win it all this season, because we’re never getting rid of him now. He’ll be the manager for the next decade making all of our heads explode. The least we can do is get a world championship out of it.

I feel bad for Weaver, but all closers have those moments (see Cleveland’s closer in this game). I would keep using him over any other option. Sometimes adversity is good for people, it might make him better next time. And that DP he turned was magnificent.
