One of the dumbest sports sayings is that a series doesn’t begin until the home team loses a game. That’s dumb, but, well, let’s just hope the the series begins very soon, preferably tonight.
I’m legit shocked Boone benched Wells. I would just as soon keep him in for his defense, and ability to at least theoretically throw out a runner.
Trevino, eh.
Lefty starter, wells be back in this game.
Lane Thomas can play some CF.
Great start by Gleyber.
Soto answers – but a great play. He hit it so well!
Nice AB by Stanton.
Judge wasn’t even close.
Borderline but defensible.
Okay, you could argue that call, and yes, they guy didn’t call it the previous time around, but WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO REMEMBERING THAT WITH TWO STRIKES YOU HAVE TO PROTECT THE STRIKE ZONE, foul of close pitches if you’re not sure? It’s like they never HEARD of the idea!
I’m okay with saying that a series doesn’t begin till the home team loses a game, because then I can pretend the 2001 WS never happened and therefore the Yankees didn’t lose.
Boyd plus pen = Schmidt better be good.
That sucks. Gleyber could have had it.
WTF were you swinging at, Judge?
I *LOVE* when that happens. He’s a superstar, most beloved player here everywhere, outside of Cleveland they didn’t he’s a STAR, but he’s superman… and he strikes out for the first out of the game for them. Nice.
Cleveland Yankeeing
How will they blow this?
That’s how. (At least part of it.)
Here’s hoping Trevino hasn’t played in long he’s forgotten what he’s supposed to do in this situation
Lucky double.
Trevino with the RISP success.
YES!!!
Trevi always ready. Because of The time off Trevi doesn’t know about RISP fail.
FFS. More stupid base running tricks. Trevino, just dumb. It boggles the mind.
NOW he remembers Yankee baseball.
How can this POSSIBLY happen to ANY MLB team THIS OFTEN?!!!!
At least he knows how to run the bases like a Yankee
Sure. Why the fuck not.
How does a guy who’s never going to steal a base in a million years get picked off? Boone fundamentals.
The hallmark of the Boone Yankees, dumb baseball.
Three guys in not even two games? How does this not reflect on Boone? And where was the first base coach to not scream at Trevi to stay close to the bag?
Do the Yankees have a baserunning coach? How much coal must that guy get at Christmas?
The Yankees, we ain’t got no fundamentals, we don’t need no stinkin’ fundamentals.
A fish rots from the head first-Boone.
Volpe or Jazz getting picked off first, I can understand. But slow as fuck Trevi?
Girardi would not tolerate this stupidity on the basepaths.
Billy Martin would be in jail for homicide.
What Billy Martin could have done with this team the last three seasons!
Where was that pitch when we had the runner on third?
Isn’t that how this works?
Middle of the order – the cure for Boyd’s pitch count, which had been very high.
Well, it’s still a one-run game, just get back to it.
But this offense against those relievers.
Yep, gotta run on Trevino.
Didn’t Boone teach the infielders to keep the tag on?That would be an out.
yeah. overran the bag
Isn’t that middle infield 101 these days?
Did Boone teach anyone anything?
I know their bullpen is great, but I still think it would be a major advantage to get Boyd out of there early.
Tuesday’s home run really got Judge going.
Jazz couldn’t wait to make an out on 3 pitches.
I think the Berti move was really some classic overthinking by Boone. Rizzo is hot, and he’s obviously quite used to playing against lefties.
Plus, maybe Rizzo makes the play on Rocchio (no way, but maybe!).
Absolutely. Rizzo looked good Tuesday. Put Berti at 3b or LF, Jazz has been terrible at the plate and Berti’s probably better defensively.
Jazz really shining in the post season, 120/434. Once you get past Stanton nothing gives the pitcher a second thought. Jazz, Berti, Volpe, Verdugo,Trevino- has any Yankee post season team ever had a worse 5-9 than those 5?
And the Yankees are good 6789?
Thank goodness they weren’t beat by fucking HEDGES.
Boyd dominating them was very predictable. Luckily he can’t pitch more than twice in the series.
Yankees are under 500 against LHPs. Cash roster construction. We really could’ve used a RHB to sub for Verdugo or Rizzo and now Jazz who inexplicably can not be subbed for. Jazz career 801 vs RHPs, 645 against LHPs.
Thy could play Jasson.
I’d have let Schmidt face Naylor.
I wouldn’t
Rizzo hits better than Jazz vs LHPs, Rizzo is better defensively than Berti at 1B, Berti hits better than Jazz vs LHPs, Berti is better defensively at 3b than Jazz.
QED
Yeah but are they named Jazz? That’s the real value.
Cashmans big dedalie acqusition must play.
Wow 2-hits in 5-innings. The offensive suckitude continues.
Judge has really heated up since the home run.
When they were already ahead in the game. Let’s see him do it when trailing and ties a game or puts them ahead. This is like 8 straight post season series he’s struggled, the last decent one was the 2019 ALDS with an 872 OPS.
Soto, Judge, ugh, double ugh.
Jazz 120/434 batting fifth.
Down 1 here is like down 4 most post season games.
Smith is the one guy I just don’t think they can hit at all. So hopefully that was his one inning, and Rizzo pinch hits in the seventh.
2009 ALCS Game 4 the 5/6/7 hitters were Posada, Matsui, Cano-marginally better than tonight’s.
He’s not a first baseman, he’s a third baseman. Play him the fuck over Jazz who isn’t hitting for shit. Why is Boone such a moron even when it comes to obvious shit.
Rizzo’s and Berti better against a LHP offensively and defensively than Jazz and Berti.
Mayza not Cousins? Is Cousins OK?
That’s two plays Rizzo probably would’ve made. Could Rizzo’s have gotten the lead runner? And Jazz looks hopeless at the plate.
I get it is a weird situation, but a serious organization does not use Tim fucking Mayza here.
Organization or manager?
Wow that was one bad throw.
Can you pull your catcher mid-inning?
I really can’t believe Booned decided to punt a one run game.
Me too.
The great ones are always unpredictable.
Start to finish in a career of bad games Boone has outdone himself
If Trevi can’t throw why is he on the rooster. Bring up Narvaez who is good defensively.
You have to score more in those first few innings, with all those baserunners.
Volpe!
Berti another Cash off the garbage heap find, 200/473 for the playoffs. Cash loves them over 30 players who aren’t very good and have no upside.
Two runs might as well be 10.
This is one of Boone’s worst managed games ever, and that’s saying a whole lot. It’s like he’s trying to do whatever is best for Cleveland.
Remember Tampa when he used Mike Ford hitting 150 to pinch hit instead of Clint Frazier who was having a big year 900 OPS.
Every game this series has been worse than the last. It’s really been an incredible run of incomprehensible incompetence
He left Mayza in to start the inning?
Really huge? But did anyone expect any other outcome? Wells had 0 chance of reaching.
Coulda used the Martian to hit, Wells is hitting 080.
If this were a movie I’d be on the edge of my couch.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But it’s not a movie. Or is it?
I fell off my couch.
UnbeLIEvable!!!!
Amazing.
And this is the LAST of their great relievers, right?
Judge!
JIIIIIIIIIDGE!
The Big Lug! Back-to-back and belly-to-belly.
Gianni!
THERE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NON SI PUO DE STOPARLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh!!!!
Seriously
What a wimpy challenge.
Belly to belly!
i like dingers.
Why is clase still in?
I can hear Smoltz now: That darned short Yankees Stadium porch. Wait …
What an incredible turn. Great hitting by judge and Stanton.
Why is Berti hitting? Rizzo must be hurt.
I mean, it’s late in the game, and they have two challenges.
Kind of lame, but what’s the downside?
And just imagine if they’d overturned it!
Ho Lee Fuk
Why in the fucking WORLD is Rizzo in for defense but not to bat for Berti?! One of the most inexplicably bad decisions I’ve ever seen.
No, just another Boonerism. So many, so little time to mention them all.
Boone is on a several inning delay
bonkers
“One of the most inexplicably bad decisions I’ve ever seen.”
All in a day’s work for Aaron Boone.
Rizzo does not look like a defensive replacement
Fucking rizzo
I’d have lived with that defensive lapse had Rizzo gotten a ribbie. Just inexplicable to not let him hit there.
Inexplicable should be Boone’s name.
What the fuck
I don’t mind walking Kwan there.
It’s ok, but kahnle got jobbed
The HP ump way too generous to Kwan.
2001 Vibes
i believe in Kahnle. he had kwan struck out. guy has it. why does boone always have to try to prove something? i kind of thought he was done with this shit.
1.2 innings and 26 pitches from kahnle. Going to weaver makes sense.
oops, i had missed the previous inning
Ohtani with a lead off HR.
I really don’t get why they don’t just lead Soto off like how Ohtani leads off. Don’t they WANT Soto and Judge to get the most possible at-bats?
The CashBoone brain trust knows more than everyone else.
It’s so weird. It’s, like, RIGHT THERE, ya know?
I love Weaver so fucking much.
I didn’t think he went at first but after Kahnle got hosed, who cares. Also, he definitely went.
He went – far more than I thought watching it.
Also – WEEAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
Watched the top half of the inning again, this time with the radio voices.
Sterling’s reaction to the challenge was priceless!
When’s the last time Volpe hit a HR?
Don, hard to complain about this game from Volpe.
I think it’s fair to say that Volpe was supposed to have power and it hasn’t really materialized in quite a while.
Anthony Volpe is like an entirely different hitter this series.
“Misfires again.”
Except that it DID catch the corner. Wasn’t called though.
What a terrible 2-0 swing by Verdugo.
And that was a strike.
Volpe should be out on sheer fucking principle.
Another base running blunder, bailed out by Yankee fielding.
Terrible baserunning somehow helps them!
Another caught in a rundown… and a miracle? I guess if he’s in the baseline and you’re going for the base…
Wow.
Golden opportunity for tack on runs. How will hey blow it?
If Wells can’t even get a fucking sacrifice fly…
Both teams playing ugly ugly baseball
What’s the rule on that?
Wells, totally lost, totally. Dude, man on third, no outs, get the run in.
Guardians out-Yanksing the Yanks
Wells is LOST at the plate. I’d still start him over Trevy, though, because of the defense.
Wells just can’t even make contact any more, 077/220, which is why The Martian should’ve hit for Trevi
Definitely.
Man up, Gleyber, man up.
Sac fly, a tack on run at least.
Gleyber’s been great this postseason.
He really has. Give him the QO!
Great at-bat by Gleyber, honestly.
That run is such a big deal
A WP/PB would be nice right now.
Gleyber delivers. When our 2B next year is hitting 195/475 we’ll miss him
This game is exhausting.
They sure made the minimum of that, but 1 tack on run is better than none.
“Yankees only get one run” like it was some big disappointment. Come on, Anderson, you know that A. They shouldn’t have had THAT run, and B. That one run is HUGE.
Time to get out there and give up 3
WHY to they try to eyeball it WITH TWO STRIKES?
Time after time after time.
If it were mechanical, fine – you can read that. But umps are inconsistent. FOUL THOSE PITCHES OFF!
Vientos ties the game with an HR. Guy has been aces for the Mets.
Can’t play rookies in the post season.
Cleveland can’t run our the clock?
Why did Volpe even think of going for third on that, anyway? What was the 3rd base coach doing?
Rizzo is KILLING THEM. What the fuck?!
Really, I didn’t want him on the roster, he’s running on fumes, IMO.
Thank goodness they got him in for defense, but not to hit for Berti with a runner on second. Genius, Boone.
WEAAAAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ha! DP.
Rizzo off the hook.
That helps. And he made an accurate throw to second which Yankee pitchers don’t always do.
Bear down.
EDIT: No, not that.
Damn, that was SMACKED.
From 0-2 to that.
He’s been avoiding doing that classic Yankee dick around with two strikes, but he definitely did it there and it hurt him.
How Christmasy. Get him out.
Strikes?
He’s tired
I had a feeling. How many pitches has Weaver thrown this post season?
Wow.
Weaver one time too many.
Take him out, now.
What a game.
Fuck
i take it back. I no longer like dingers.
Well hey, at least they got the double play!
I don’t think he was tired. I think he was feeling the pressure. That’s what it looked like.
Once it was tied… look at THOSE pitches. He could have done that to those two.
Brutal.
Absolutely crushed.
I agree that Weaver was feeling the pressure. Which is silly, especially when he had him 0-2.
They’re gonna lose this game now. That they managed just 1 run when they had a chance to seal the game and couldn’t get a hit from any one of 3 guys, for a second run.
Thank goodness for that insurance run!
Just makes the loss worse.
Their usual failure to get an actual hit with RISP, or they could’ve scored 2.
So now… Ovula vs. Holmes?
Why was Judge swinging at that?
Why would he feel the pressure now after so much success, especially up two. I don’t buy it. Maybe he’s tired. Maybe he just made some bad pitches, it happens. I don’t buy he felt the pressure.
You saw it with Thomas and then with Gimenez. He got ahead 0-2 on Thomas, then just dicked around until it was 3-2 and he had to give him something to hit. Then with Gimenez, he just went right after him and struck him out on three pitches.
Exactly.
NO MANFRED MANN!
Nice.
I still can’t get over that Thomas at-bat. The Noel homer was whatever, he hung a changeup, but the dicking around to Thomas I just can’t get over, not with two outs and two strikes.
Absolutely. Infuriating. Disappointing. Just awful.
I’ve seen this movie in 2001.
Why did STANTON swing at THAT?
This is the ONLY time I’m okay with running for Stanton.
Can Jazz actually do something positive here? Jazz?
Oh my Lord what an INCREDIBLE play!
What a play
C’mon, Volpe.
That really was an amazing play, especially with how fast Jazz is.
Spectacular play, damn.
We get people picked off base.
There no way the Yankees win this.
It seems very hard to believe they even get past this inning.
i thought jazz was safe, it looked like his foot came off, no?
It came off AFTER he touched the bag first. He’s out as soon as his foot touches the bag with the ball.
After the catch though
RISP Fail built in. That’s why they manged just a sac fly in the 9th. Get a hit with RISP? Preposterous!
Damndamndamndamndamn.
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, incoming.
Go Ex Pats
Darling trying to jinx him so bad.
I walk Kwan here.
Oh, my. Come on.
Here it comes.
Crazy.
Wow.
Well, they earned it.
No, they earned the loss. Miserable RISP fail struck again. That is why I wasn’t thrilled with a mere sac fly in the 9th.
And there it is. This series has completely changed, even though it is Yankees up 2 games to 1. Boone’s overuse of Weaver will be the takeaway.
The Yankees don’t handle adversity well. Odds are they lose Friday, and we get to 2-2.
Yeah, don’t agree. Wasn’t a problem for Goose. Wasn’t a problem for Mariano setting up for Wetteland.
And after the game was tied, he blew the next guy away.
You just saw him suddenly get scared of the strike zone all of a sudden.
maybe. right now Weaver is not Goose or Mo. He’s a guy with good stuff that people haven’t seen a lot of
You’re talking a legend, Mariano, and a great closer, Gossage. Weaver has proven?
Everyone’s not Mo or Gossage. He’s a guy who was never much who’s on a hot streak. Is he for real? Maybe.
I’m not saying he’s those guys, I’m saying that a bunch of 2-inning saves isn’t a catastrophic, unbearable burden.
Lots of guys used to do it. I really have no doubt that it could (and should) be done more often today, tod.
And looking at that inning, it doesn’t look like he was gassed.
It looks exactly like he got scared of the strike zone for a couple of batters.
I mean, should be able to survive a moment of jitters from your closer.
Win the next two.
True except there’s a severe dearth of offense on this team
After Volpe struck out I tapped out.Cant expect to score off guys like Avila who didn’t even make the ALDS roster.
Two strikes, two outs, up two, bottom of the 9th. I’m guessing the worst playoff loss in Yankee history.
After Stanton, that is a terrible lineup. Worst post season lineup in Yankees history.
Oh, come on, they’ve had SOOOO many bad playoff losses.
That bad? When? This was worse than 2001.
Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS. Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS. Obviously Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. Game 5 of the 1995 ALDS. Game 5 of the 1997 ALDS. Heck, just against Cleveland, there was the midgies game and the Knoblauch game.
In ’15 when the Yankees lost to Houston in the WC play-in they went to war with Chris Young, Chase Headley and Rob Refsnyder.
I’m not sure this lineup is even on the first page of results for “worst Yankee postseason lineup.”
Game 4 they were up 1 in the 9th, lost in the 12th. Game 5 they lost a 2 run lead in the 8th, lost in the 14th. 2001 they were only up 1. Those losses were more meaningful but not as statistically improbable as up 2, 2 strikes, 2 out no one on, and no Ramirez hitting.
Oh, sure, most UNLIKELY, I agree, this was the most unlikely loss.
Will Weaver close tomorrow if they need a closer?
I think so, yes. Especially since Holmes ALSO gave up a two-run home run.
With Gil going they’ll need a lot of pitchers.
Weaver’s been used a lot, too much, probably. Assuming a Yankees lead is also asking a lot. They just can’t hit with RISP.
And a lot of runs. Which is why I said above, it will be tied at 2-2 in games. They need to show me at least that they have some balls. It will be way too easy for them to sag after tonight and Gil starting.
One strike away from the best win of the year…..
I would have felt better if they had just gone ahead and lost 3-1.
Right.
Yankees hitting 147 with RISP for the playoffs, 1-8 tonight, that’s the worst of any team still in the playoffs. Going into tonight Cleveland 224, Mets 284, Dodgers 313. Of the teams who weren’t swept in 2 only Detroit was worse.
When there’s a man in scoring position does anyone expect a good outcome? RISP 2 outs before tonight they were hitting 121.
Nope, the best one can hope for is a sac fly. Soto failed in the 9th with a man on 3rd and 2 outs. Two out RISP hits are a big deal, but the Yankees don’t have it in them.
I think it was still a good sign for them that they came back and scored those four late runs in this one. They’ll be confident against Clase now. Yes, the Guardians will be confident against Weaver and Holmes, as well, but them’s the breaks.
I don’t know. That was a great game, and they lost it. Those Judge and Stanton home runs were incredible. And they actually tacked on a run.
Also, seriously, Volpe’s looked good. And Rizzo was hitting well, although I can’t believe his defense tonight, all of a sudden. And Stanton’s been great. And Gleyber’s been great. If you add Soto and Judge, that’s 6 positions hitting. If Wells and Chishom can start hitting even just a little…
Volpe is having a good series but he struck out agains Avila in the 10th with the go ahead run on at second. Gleyber is 1-8 in the playoffs. Except for Soto the rest of the team has been useless RISP.
Yeah, the loss hurts, but it was a good game. The Yankees got to Clase, that’s huge.
Dodgers make hitting mediocre pitching look so easy.
Well that sucked.
Did Holmes have the lead runner at third? Kay said Holmes had him by 30 feet. It’s easier to pitch with a man on first than third.
He had a chance, yes, but I don’t mind getting the out there.
Look, you let Kahnle go one more and then Weaver comes in for a fresh inning, game over.
I’m telling you he had that guy.
I didn’t see the previous inning but the 2b was bullshit
he got two outs
kwan had struck out but the ump blew it
he was fine.
Now who is going to pitch tomorrow? Kahle X Weaver X Holmes X
sucks
It was an exciting and exhausting game. But the Yankees weren’t great. Trevino got picked off first. Volpe ran into an out but Cleveland blew the run down and Ramirez dropped the ball. Yankee first basemen had 3 or 4 misplays. The Yankees were 1/8 RISP and before the Judge home run hitters were 1/20. Wells can’t even make contact any more, Holmes and Weaver had been great, but not tonight. And Boone was Boone.
Gil is going to be juiced out of his mind tomorrow. I would be amazed if he doesn’t walk the bases loaded in the first inning.
Lots of walks and stolen bases, I fear.
Mets about to be down 3-1 in games, Yankees likely to be tied at 2-2 in games. If it gets to 2-2, all bets are off.
Not so fast.
The Trevi pick off might’ve been the whole game.
The Mets ship is taking on water and is about to capsize. Can they salvage anything?
they’ll be the 15th team to come back from 3-1, book it. Teams of destiny always destine.
Dodgers – Guardians if the Yankees lose Friday. Cleveland is due for a WS victory.
Brutal loss, but I fear what will get lost in all of this is … how absolutely insanely Boone is managing this series. It pushes the boundaries of rational thinking. I feel like we’re in a Twilight Zone episode and the manager is purposely trying to make any possible move to make his team fail.
Yeah, the baserunning sucks and yeah, the RISP hitting is atrocious … but Boone’s “managing” is worse than all of that combined.
But hey, it’s not like anyone could have predicted Holmes would cost them a postseason game if used in a close game … oh wait, I did. And any other rational person watching a season where he blew 13 saves would have. Sadly, that wasn’t even in the top 5 boneheaded moves Boone made in this game. I really hope they win it all this season, because we’re never getting rid of him now. He’ll be the manager for the next decade making all of our heads explode. The least we can do is get a world championship out of it.
I feel bad for Weaver, but all closers have those moments (see Cleveland’s closer in this game). I would keep using him over any other option. Sometimes adversity is good for people, it might make him better next time. And that DP he turned was magnificent.
One more thing: why is Jon Berti in a postseason Yankee lineup as THE FIRST BASEMAN????? Ridiculous. If you don’t want to use Rizzo, use Cabrera. Just don’t ever, ever, EVER use Berti.
Good question. They’ve been prepping Waldo for 2 years to play 1B.
Cabrera might get a hit or two.
