Okay, so Stanton is back without a rehab game. So let’s see who he gets to face in his first game back…Zack Wheeler. Cool, cool, cool…cool.
Nice change of pace for Verdugo by opening the game with a grounder to second.
I guess I sort of get letting Verdugo try to stay hot in the leadoff spot…but, nope, it still doesn’t make sense to me to have Chisholm in the middle of the lineup.
Wow, you know you threw a nice sinker when you catch Soto looking like that.
Judge!
The Philly pitchers seem a little tougher than the Boston pitchers.
Shingles and Judge don’t care.
Really surprised he went after Judge like that. There’s no way that Zack Wheeler was concerned about Austin Wells, ya know? Just give Judge garbage to hit, and if you walk him, you walk him.
Chisholm in the middle of the lineup is like when Boone would bat LeMahieu fifth or whatever. It just doesn’t fit. And I know Chisholm has some power, but, nope, still doesn’t work.
I guess Wheeler’s ego wouldn’t let him walk Judge with 2 out and bases empty.
Agreed, and, well, that’s pretty silly.
“How many balls can I throw to start off the game” challenge by Gil.
That at-bat was, like, a microcosm of how frustrating Gil can be.
A natural born third baseman.
Why can’t I find this game on TV or streaming apps?
Disregard. Found it. Glad it’s buried on Prime.
It’s on Prime Video.
Amazon Prime
Oh come along, boys, and listen to my tale,
I’ll tell you all my troubles on the ol’ Chisholm trail.
Come a-ti yi youpy youpy yea youpy yea
I thought Jazz was strictly pull. I guess he’s riffing.
Maybe Rice is not cooked.
Having him as your fucking NUMBER EIGHT hitter is quite the luxury.
Turning a DP in his first play as a third baseman in his career, and then hitting a home run. That seems not that bad of a day for Chisholm.
Judge, Chisholm, Rice HR’s. Will they score again?
I mean, under normal circumstances, that’d be a very fair critique, but, well, scoring three runs at ALL against Wheeler is impressive, no?
Stats I didn’t know
Gleyber in July has an 813 OPS.
Grisham 725 which is perfectly ok.
It’s been Verdugo (and DJ) killing them. In his non Red Sox games this month he is 9 for 56 with no HRs and 2 RBI. Ugh
DJ has been terrible all year.
Interesting that since the ASB Volpe is at 333/526/860.
Gleyber has been hot his last 21 games.
This game so far is just peak 2024 Gil. Extremely frustrating, but also very impressive.
Gil’s adjustment to throw more sliders is really helping his fastball & change.
Agreed, but he needs to locate it a LOT better.
What happened at 2B?
Another peak Gil inning. No no no no no yes.
Chisholm’s TYM.
Challenge: Can they score again? If not, this will be in the ‘L’ column.
you can’t stop rice, you can only hope to contain him.
Bases loaded challenge. Is Soto up to the challenge?
YES! Challenge met (awful pich by Wheeler).
That was a nice AB by Verdugo.
It really was.
Wow, that sinker from Wheeler is so impressive against Soto.
What an impressive hitter Soto is.
Awful pitch though by Wheeler. Of course, most Yankees hitter would have popped it up.
Up to the challenge.
Base open and pitching to Judge?
Wheeler ego is massive.
To be fair, he lived up to the ego in that Judge at-bat.
That was an oddly bad at-bat by Judge.
He’s been looking at a quite a few called third strikes lately.
WELLS!!!
Wells! Two run TRIPLE.
Great call by Girardi that Wheeler just seemed to get impatient in both the Soto and Wells at-bats.
Maybe Wells is who they should’ve walked. I mean Stanton was on deck. In what world was Stanton off a month with no workouts getting a hit?
Correct. Wells has been en fuego since June.
Girardi being very sweet about Thomson.
Austin Wells has been the best hitting catcher in the bigs for the last two months, and after all the concern about whether he could stick behind the plate, he’s adding value there.

I really can’t believe he walked Turner there.
That’s more like it, Tonkin. This is the Tonkin I knew and loved.
So, all in, a….good outing by Gil, I guess? Tough lineup, and the results were frustrating, but I guess good overall?
Judge isn’t human.
These wild pitches are NOT good, Tonkin!
Five run lead – who do you use for the 8th and 9th?
Volpe and Chisholm.
Is DJ LeMahieu seriously pinch-hitting for Ben Rice in the year of our lord 2024?
Got to get DJ going. He’s won 2 batting titles.
Wow, a groundout, who could have guessed that?!
Seven run lead. Are we in Gomez territory yet?
This team, famine to fest.
At least Gleyber is consistent. He’ll make an error in all sorts of different game scenarios, not just important ones!
All That Jazz
No one told him he was supposed to get WORSE when he got here.
Jazz Yankee OPS 1400
Good company

Holy fucking shit that is impressive.
I doubt he can finish his career above 1.000; it would be incredible if he could. But very happy they didn’t include the faux NeL numbers in that list.
And we tend to forget just how great Lou Gehrig was. No ALS, he’s at 600 HR’s, well over 3000 hits, and an unbelievable number of RBI’s. He took excellent care of himself in the off season, a rarity in the day.
Fourteen runs. Did they win?
Yes! but the last time they scored 14 runs they were shut out the next game.
Stanton went 0 for 4; who could have predicted that? Uhhhh everybody.
Bonds hit dingers in 11% of his PAs in 2001. Judge is around last year’s pace at 8.2%, but behind his 2022 8.9% pace.
Judge has maybe 225 PAs left in the season. He’d need to increase his pace to 15.5% to get there. It’s a tall order.
BUT if Judge can pick it up to Bonds’ 11% over the remainder AND the Yankee lineup is so prodigious and turns over so regularly Judge can get 5-6 ABs per game, then he’s got a real shot at 74.
Dammit Cash, this is no time to skimp. Dramatically overhaul this roster by tomorrow and give Judge the support he needs. History is at stake here.
But Judge’s year has been drought, feast, drought, feast. He’s JUST breaking out of drought #2, so that’ll bring the number down.
Yankees, Stros, Pirates in on Yandy Diaz. Kikuchi to Stros.
It’s interesting. I don’t see first as being an area of need, but I guess it COULD be, right? Yandy Diaz is obviously a LOT better than Rice (and holy shit would he fit PERFECTLY on Houston, so I don’t want him ending up there).
Also, couldn’t Rice theoretically be the backup catcher? Is he THAT bad behind the plate?
But Yandy Diaz is such a Houston name…
It REALLY is, right? We can’t let them have him! He’ll be TOO PERFECT!
