Gerrit Cole flipped his glove in the air with a disgusted eyeroll, his final pitch having landed in right field for a run-scoring single. Having voiced his intent to even a personal score, the Yankees ace instead exited another Subway Series game on the losing side.
Having surrendered four homers in a June 25 start at Citi Field, Cole said that he “owed” the Mets a strong performance, strong talk that aligned with the Yankees’ expressed belief that their month-long woes will soon end. That payback did not materialize, as the right-hander served up three homers in the Yankees’ 12-3 loss on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.
“Unfortunately, I just let it get out of hand too much and didn’t give us a good chance to win the game,” Cole said. “We’re definitely sitting in it right now, and not happy about it.”
Honestly, I’m not all that concerned about Cole. He occasionally has stinkers like this when he gives up a few home runs. Even at his peak, he is a guy who gives up the long ball (he has given up over 30 homers in a season twice in his career, and he had a Top-10 Cy Young finish in one of those seasons). He strings more of these outings together, and I’ll be concerned, but one bad one following three very good to great outings, and I’m not concerned.
Cole getting rocked was really the story of the night, but what I AM obviously concerned about is this piece of shit offense. It’s pathetic. Luckily, at least Austin Wells is showing something. Everyone else not named Soto and Judge is not. Boone starting LeMahieu at FIRST BASE over Ben Rice is just…so fucking sad.
The trade deadline can’t come fast enough.

Remember when cashman traded Chapman for Gleyber and then just re-signed him 3 months later? I strongly recommend they do the same with Soto. Call him in, tell him you want him on a Yankee WS winning team which will only happen if he agrees to be traded. Get a bunch of top prospects and voila. We are not winning anything with this team anyway.

You trade Soto when you’re 1.5 games out of first and you’ll never see Soto again. What the Yankees and Hal have to do is prove to Soto that they are committed to winning, like the Dodgers did with Ohtani. Would Soto defer some money? I think unless Soto loves being part of Yankee mystique and history, only righting the ship now will help.
